Today's program focuses on beers with cool names. We try three pale beers on the first half, two dark beers on the second half and a strange brew in the middle brewed with no hops whatsoever! We also take a look at the states and cities with the most breweries.
This is the Beer of the Day Podcast podcast. From Beer of the Day World headquarters in California, This is the Beer of the Day Podcast. And here tonight is I went through a vault and I found all the beers with really
interesting names and some of them are. There so long. But they're all different styles of beers we've got. A. Couple of stout that we're going to try tonight. On the program. Tonight. Scott Sweeney and from Pasadena, Jeff Miller. Hey everybody. Gentlemen good evening here as a goal and Sweeney has been a while since we had you on the show it has it has been a while I can't believe you actually let me back on the show after last time yeah well the they dropped the lawsuit. Against. You know we're friends again yeah but it's. At least for a while at least until they release this episode Yeah well let's just get right into the first beer the night this is the suicide squeeze this is from Fort George brewery in Astoria Oregon. Seven point two percent.
I.P.A. comes in a yellow can there's kind of a snake on the outside with a bunch of X.'s on it I don't quite know the significance of it maybe it will bite like a snake will see. Or does it squeeze like a snake you're strangles you I think that's what. That's very good might be a couple of double meanings here this one yeah and the suicide squeezes I think my favorite play in all of baseball so it pours a golden color slightly hazy I can't really see through it too well except for like shadows and stuff behind it. There is. Not too much noticeable carbonation and there seems to be like a the cloudiness is formed by a little suspended particles in the beer. It's not sedimentary thing it's just a suspension of. Particulates matter which is kind of cool and we're kind of like that. It's pretty like a lot I mean I think it's almost straw colored and it's it's pretty clear I mean there's a slight haze to it it's not a hazy I.P.A. by any means it's pretty clear the head is a pretty white. Foamy head seems to have some. You know pretty so far looks like it's going to retain pretty well you know like a mild citrus or tropical maybe a little mango hop aroma. Yeah different some tropical fruit it smells pretty dang you know I like to have
that sort of dank aroma you know and hopefully that carries into the taste Yeah get some melon on the. Floral I mean it's a. It's definitely a West Coast I.P.A. there's a you know a little bit of tropical fruit a little bit of citrus. I think there's
an interesting sort of bite to it and I don't know what it is maybe it's a particular mall that they use but there's a. There's kind of a unique flavor in here that it's going to take me a few sips to pinpoint. I I like a lot I get these nice tropical hop flavors right up initially and then those fade and you get a little bit of the mold backbone coming through and then in the after taste it's not super bitter it kind of the bitterness doesn't linger and. It kind of a is a real kind of easy drinking I.P.A.. It's inviting me makes me want to take another sip I take a sip of it and just first impressions wow this is pretty good yeah I think it's really good Never had I don't know if I've had any beer so for George before this is in Oregon this is a seasonal release it's only available you know I don't know the exact time frame but in the spring time maybe into early summer but I think this is one of their you know kind of special I.P.A. is. Definitely very very drink a bull very smooth. I like the the mild. On the back end of the beer and also just kind of really easy drinking really good mouth feels really good too is coating so it kind of. I wouldn't say it's sticky but maybe slightly sticky so it kind of coats the inside of your mouth and you really get the full flavor from it. So my P.A.'s will come off then not many seventy seven point two percent of Ph will come out of them and this one certainly doesn't. But the alcohol for being so high it's not that noticeable and it's
pretty light bodied I mean it's you mentioned it's pretty easy drinker this is just one I'd like to sit down and said I'm not going to chug it I really like the finish on the spirits Well it's just very slightly better maybe some light grapefruit
bitterness in the finish. You know what I like I.P.S. I have a little bit of bitterness but not too much in it it lingers but it's a very very pleasant aftertaste Yes it makes my mouth water the name of the spirit to it comes from it's a collaboration with suicide squeeze records which is in. So much that for George. That's sort of the name comes from an obviously you mentioned the baseball reference for baseball fans out there that probably enjoy this beer and it's got the snake on it I mean I like this bear a lot I like I like the artwork I like the taste this is a really great beer my favorite beer of the night so far yeah me to go before we get to the next beer does it even have any interest in beers they want to mention Yeah I had one I wanted to share with you guys and you know I drink a lot I.P.A. So this is going to be another I.P.A. but I had one called Danka Saurus And you know I found it to be interesting because it was from Texas and we talked about how we get very few beers from Texas that we can get in California. So it's nice to get a really solid I.P.A. from Texas this one is from Cedar Creek brewery Again it's called Thank a saurus it was hazy that you know New England style you know juicy and fruity I liked it a lot I mean it has sort of the typical citrus flavors that you look for in that type of style but also some like peach and melon that I think made it unique I haven't had any other beers from Cedar Creek but I thought that was a pretty tasty I.P.A.. Recently I was with Lance at Bottle rock in Napa. And Napa is wine country and we drink our fair share wine but. A certain point you need to get some beer in your life and we were staying in Santa Rosa which you know is home too. Russian River and when you're in Santa Rosa and your hotel is one point five miles from Russian River you've got to go there so we went to a Russian River and had plenty and a headline pig from the source I also had there they're happy. Pale Ale which was OK but obviously
there's no beaten. Blind Pig and. Employ me so I was good to taste it fresh I didn't really try to think knew I kind of walked in the door and knew what I wanted to try. Just about five or six miles south of there is Petaluma and we went to log in to this where who on our last show we talked about they've sold the other half of their brewery to Heineken but nothing has changed about the brewery their tap room beyond the beer it's still completely top notch and it's hard to not Lance isn't ever
come to Northern California so I took him there and we had a great time there patio is awesome food is great and they have you know fifteen different beers to dry. So I tried a born again yesterday that was the fresh top one and then my other beer I tried was the log nater Imperial lager which was a high A.B.V. lager. Very good as well as strong malt backbone not too bitter I don't know it was probably eight or nine percent but not noticeable at all there's a few Imperial loggers I've had recently and this stacked up right up there with it it was quite enjoyable so I don't think they distribute it anywhere but if you're ever at the brewery in Petaluma log on to Hunter was quite good as well you know that's kind of an interesting thing I
don't often to be a trend but I've seen a lot more Imperial loggers in the last. Six months then than ever before and I don't know if it was really made or they just had loggers and had some higher percentage but it'll be interesting to see if they make more of those especially for us they don't drink a lot of lager as it's really unique to get that style I think that I mean you see it look blondes you blonde ales to where they're trying to get higher A.B.V. ones because with the I.P.A. as you know seven point two seven point two nine point zero we're having on the the first half of the show tonight why do we get to enjoy all the high A.B.V. beers when all the the longer drinkers get four and a half and five percent you know so what will give them something else as well something a little extra. A little something a little something something. Back to the law getting this reference. OK well. Let's get into the next beer now and have to take a deep breath to say the name of this beer it's called the slowest drink at the status bar on the sunny is day in the greatest city. It's from Woodland empire in Boise Idaho another seven point two percent I.P.A.. I mean we had to get this I mean based on the name this is this is what the show is all about tonight yeah but by the name of beers this one has to take the cake and I'm worried as the programmer for the beer the day website this might break the thing that posted on Twitter each day I don't know if it's going to be able if it is not going to with all the other stuff that you know I say you know the beer the day for that today is this it has at the brewery and there's a lot to fit in there and this might tip it over the edge so we'll see what happens whenever this becomes the bigger the day. Yeah there's definitely there's got to be some really great story behind this name and it be interesting to see. What what the story as the name is long and so long it's almost telling you a story so you know there's something else there like whoever came up with the name definitely there's there's a story there the slowest drink at the saddest bar on the sunniest day in the greatest city you know when we do our strange period segment we're always looking for strange beers based on ingredients and what not but if we ever based it on a name this would be up there yeah definitely So compared to the last beer. It looks about the same it looks almost exactly the same and so just describe it golden color. Partially hate cloudy not hazy but you know you it's not little it's not your earthly clear Yeah I do see a couple strands of bubbles floating up which is more than the other one had and I don't see the small little suspended particulate matter in this one. The head is about the same maybe a little thinner maybe slightly larger bubbles. And maybe dissipating a little faster although when you say the name that that long you know the head dissipates because it takes up time. And I think the head is a little foamy or on this one yeah me too mine's Mine's kind of frothy I'm really into these like translucent I.P.A. is I mean sometimes I don't want a super crystal clear I.P.A. but I also don't want the super hazy one and so I really like these ones that are a little bit in between. Where I think it's translucent agree now whereas the last one was kind of a mango tropical hop this one the malt seem to come through a little more for me like a little graham cracker something. A little bit more bready a little more bready there is some hop quality there it's. It's probably tropical also. I can't say that it's pine and they can't say that it's really citrus so. If I had to pick something I'd have to say it's tropical but not as tropical as you know you this one and
this is super fresh I mean we just got this a couple days ago I don't know exactly what day it was canned it doesn't say that on the can but I'm assuming that since it just came out I mean this is pretty dang crash Yeah it was definitely on a sunny day in the great city it's a little on the taste it's it's not a multi-year than I expected and it's it's not a West Coast style. Not East Coast it's maybe a little bit in between and it we've said that before about some. You know non you know breweries that are not on a coast. But it has a little more mall presence that I realize the hops are a little more reserved on this yeah that's what I got to. I mean so they used what Denali when Ochs it says here. So you can definitely pick that up I'm not too familiar with Denali I mean I haven't had I mean that's not a hop that I see very often. It's tough to grow those in Alaska. I think the aftertaste in this one lingers a little bit more and it's not a hop aftertaste it's the hops are more
upfront for me the multis bready sweetness kind of lingers on in the optics for this one for me I think it's very dry and I generally like that in an I.P.A. but like the mouth feel on this is super dry it's almost like powdery or chalky and it's not a bad
thing I like I like I.P.S. I have that dry taste but you know after a couple sips it it's getting it's has that accumulating bitterness in the finish and. It's turning into a much better beer than I initially thought or the hops. Hops to accumulate for sure it is it does get a little more bitter when you the more you drink it and a light to medium body. I think maybe it's the dryness but it seems to be pretty well carbonated it is balance but it's you know my initial thought I think this was a really Maltese change in a little bit I think it's just taken a little bit longer for the hot and the hot players to come through. Good beer though. Incoming transmission You've Got Mail. Comments this week. But the comment from the car driving by Jeff's place it's not let me know what that was I live in a very urban area OK Pasadena. Downtown I'm sure there will be sirens and honk game. Any minute Yeah so we've got a bunch of people signed up for the website. Today I realized well yesterday Sweeney here told me that he's never received a beer the day text message I was like what. He's like yeah I signed up my phone number and never got the message. So I went out and checked and sure enough somebody had a bad time zone that they selected and was breaking the thing so. Anyone who signed up in the past nine months hasn't been getting any text messages until today. So we sent out double the text messages today and so everyone's going at the emails and text messages for the better the day each and every day sorry for the technical issues there so one could say. I saved the day. You saved the beer the day yeah. Our comments this week. J H chose NEC. Commented on chick bar from Chattanooga Brewing Company in Tennessee this is my favorite beer in Chattanooga now we have not had many Tennessee beers on this. Program we're going to have to remedy that situation. Sweet Water for twenty extra pale ale. Was on the site U.K. bear said on my recent vacation to Florida this is what I drink
and. They were yeah while writing this letter is a sunny day a mighty good indication to Florida this is what I was drinking I love I.P.A. Now this is my favorite one get some over the U.K. please I guess U.K. was visiting Florida from. Over the over the pond and dark beer ma'am one two three he signed up just today actually as we recorded this. He got mentored on the sly ripe order from Yahoo brewing company it's a great alternative to Guinness as flavor and very drink a bull if I like dark where I suggest you give it a try. If you like dark beer will put the will put into that I think some of our users maybe have been drinking beer when they read the comment while they're on the site yet so I mean sometimes I'm right and beer descriptions when I'm you know having a beer have a few I mean Evelyn every single time so nothing wrong with that times it requires a little editing Yeah I don't think I've ever put a comment while I wasn't drinking a beer that's what prompts the comment Yeah makes sense yeah. A lot of comments the website so you can leave a comment on any beer on the site right at the bottom just cited in there and will read it on the show on Facebook we're on Facebook at facebook dot com slash the beer of the day Chris Geiger. Mr criticise you Dylan he commented on the mommy monster haha we had this at our last share glad you were forced to drink it too. And I. I said it wasn't as bad as I was fearing it would be definitely strange though that was probably the strangest period ever had perhaps as a strange grew calm a sewer I'd like that but it had seaweed. Some kind of fish oh yeah I was it was odd not bad on Instagram we are on Instagram at Pier the day site tactics twenty seven commented on Alegate White one of my go to elegance what so killer Oh yes what is a pretty good beer really is it's a classic that you can always go back to that's right if you have any comments leave them on your they dot com Leave them on Facebook leave them on Twitter at beer the day leave them on Instagram and we'll read them right here on our next program our that's going to the next beer we have from one of our favorite breweries over the past year Melvin Brewing Company they're probably getting tired of us doing their beers on this show. This is the Drunken Master That's a pretty good man try to time that with Jeff. Is a very in sync spot you know I remember it wasn't that long ago that we first had to buy for and we had to Melbourne I.P.A. and now we seem to be getting a lot more Melbourne beers but that's really really cool because I've never had a Melbourne beer that I don't like me to. Yeah and then you went to that Melvin event at each road at Beechwood and you met Geoff and he's lined up the two or it's early so Melbourne is just opening all kinds of doors for us. It's great I know all this all this started just because when I was at a bottle shop in Seattle. A guy says to me I know if you're visiting from out of town this is not a Seattle beer but you should really pick up this Melbourne stuff because it's really good. That's the only reason we know about now and I think. And tourist got on the thing I'm excited I've never had an elven here so this is the first for me this is their double I.P.A. nine percent a double if they're one of many double I.P.A. is right I think and triple I.P.A. as in single I.P.A. as they have a bunch I.P.A. Melvyn is on tour probably once a month so if you want to sign up for two of or this is what we're getting a lot of these beers now and it's a service that features a beer each day and or multiple beer thought probably three a day and then if you like the beer you just say send it to me and throws it in your next box and once a month they ship you a box and you get beers from all over the country and they're all pretty quality so it's not more super more expensive than you would pay at a store so it's a really good service we've been using it a lot probably more than we even should because we're running out of refrigerator space but if you want to sign up for it you can go to who or T.V. you know you are Dot beer the day dot com or if you're lazy just type T A V tab dot beer the day dot com sign up and either Jeff or I at random will get ten dollars off our next purchase that will help us buy beer for this pod cast. Drunken Master what he'll see here boys. Well. You know it's a little hazy more it's more kind of gold in town a little bit a Coppertone in in the in the hue of the beer very light on the head. Very thin sort of wispy had I mean it dissipated really quickly than mine kind of has it's kind of sticky on the sides of it it's got some legs on it. Yeah lots of lace in. And. Was. The aroma strong. I like the aroma and I get this a lot with Melbourne beers and not everybody agrees on me but I get a lot of Tea aroma maybe maybe you guys will finally agree with me but I just get a lot of tea I don't know what kind of tea but just like tea leaves. In that nose I get hops I get a resin this Piney hops and I think I think I'm picking up what I just put down over there about that about the tea thank you I mean a definite spells happy we're all right everybody's palate is different too but I get some I get a little bit of melon a little bit tealeaves definitely a hobby I really like the aroma of this beer I would. I would buy this beer just for the Roma just to smell it. With every Melbourne beer I'm always surprised at how hidden the alcohol is. This is nine percent. The first one we had to buy for was ten percent we had one recently the lamb. Lamb the triple lamb to one. Triple I.P.A. It was twelve thirteen I don't know same thing. Can't notice it all the other double I.P.S.A. like eight nine ten percent and there SMITH Yeah this is when the malt the mall and hop characteristics really come together to to blend in that nine percent it's a little this is a little sneaky. Sneaky near exactly right this beer is less bitter than the first two beers we've had and maybe it's because they pump up the the sugar a little bit you get the high alcohol but it's not like overly sugary nor overly multi or overly hoppity or overly alcoholic everything is just on a scale of one to. Everything's that like a six Yeah and it all blends together and it makes it incredibly drinkable and incredibly smooth and I don't know who the Drunken Master is but they've mastered a smooth sailing. I agree with that but I I do think they actually. Push some things to the extreme
like I I think it is very multi but also very hop e. But they blend well together and there is some sweetness here but I I don't want to sound like it's like like I said if we say it's six out of ten like it's just like lacking either of those no you're right basically but it seems it seems because nothing overpowers it seems less the writing is I think they just don't care or are balance each other out very well. It's tasty I mean it's a lot of double I Piers especially at nine percent are going to be sort of big and bold with the flavors I mean they have to have a lot of malts have to have a lot of hops. This one I think has the Tristan tropical fruit for the hops. And it's slightly better but in a very good way I mean it's not bitter like some people are turned off by bitter I.P.A.. So it says here that it won the national Imperial. India Pale Ale championship in two thousand and sixteen. And if you are checking out the can or the bottle or some of their verbiage from their site they
have this big thing about kung fu and drinking I.P.A. while watching confit That's pretty cool yeah they play kung fu movies in the brewery I think it like at all times when they're open it's awesome. It and I'm almost on my beer and there we talked
about the her. It initially in the lace in this left a lot of sort of sticky lacing on the glass and I like that I think epically that's a sign of a beer that I enjoyed. Yeah also a sign of a beer that you think you're going to going to enjoy Jeff realized he only has one of these and if he only has one he's going to take a picture of it so you really can't drink very much of it he's going to save some for the picture he's going to take tomorrow and so he went twice to go look in the fridge to see if he had another when hidden away because he wanted to drink a whole one tonight and now he can do that. That's true but I have a pretty good system of. It in most of the carbonation intact I mean if I if I have this tomorrow morning probably earlier because I want to get the flavor earlier the better it'll still be pretty good certainly. Close the first half of the show the I.P.O.'s are done but when we come back we have a strange brew with no hops at all. I don't know how that's possible what we're going to find out Plus we're going to try a couple of Stout's from breweries in Kansas and Missouri all of that when we return here on the beer today podcast. Are if you enjoy the beer the day podcast and want to help us out one way you can do so is by shopping on Amazon through the beer of the Day website I put a little banner on the right hand side of the site it says shop on Amazon so if you go to beer the day you click that banner you do your regular shopping it does not cost you a single penny more and we get a little kickback from Amazon based on what you spent. For example just this week somebody would do the beer they website clicked on the banner purchased the Camelback shoot water bottle one point five liters charcoal. They paid fifteen ninety five for a water bottle. Seems excessive to me but it did have free one day shipping so there's at least that. I should say that looks like a fine product very quality it keeps things probably cold or hot it's leakproof it's a. Good thing. Like how that's a I like that's a function that's a benefit of buying that sleeper if you pay sixty dollars for a while you're going to get better damn well be utterly pergola proof. Anyway we made eighty eight cents on the deal so they
say they bought the water bottle we got eighty eight cents for doing nothing and we're going to put that eighty eight cents towards beer on a future podcast and whoever bought that water bottle helped us out and we think you for that. Another way you can help us out is by raiding and reviewing us on i Tunes This is going to help us move up the rankings so that when someone comes to the stumbles on to i Tunes and types in beer podcast because you know you want to hear people talk about beer so
you want to find to be your podcast and we want to be at the top of that list when they type it so if you go and rate and review our podcast it's going to help us move up the rankings that's going to help us out to. Probably not help us out that much
if you don't rate us a five you know the radius of three it's just going to leave us in the middle of the pack if you're into one you might do some damage so. Please. Welcome back to the beer of the day podcast Strange Brew segment is where we find the strangest brew we can. In this case a beer with no hops at all is very strange in my book and I'm looking forward to trying this this is the golden state of mine. Mine are mine and. Mine golden state of mind industries out of Oakland California. Four point four percent Ehlers same translucent kind of yellow golden pretty light colored pretty clear though and I see some some big bubbles sparsely populated but they're large in size floating up it's got a pretty two fingers of foamy sea foam white head I'd call it fizzy because it's sort of then the consistency of the head it's pretty thin and it seems to be dissipating pretty quickly we have had the new Yeah so he was a little more aggressive Yeah stick with one pour Yeah my my bad so that yeah so we have some we have a decent amount of head on on this so I'm not detecting any hops in the aroma You don't say but I do detect like some corn like mult. Some barley horrid in barley and get in like a flower like a banana. I could see some banana like a little bit of a Belgian. But you know like flowery like camel meal again with a tender little bit of well so I iced tea. They it's not a real category but they call this a California tea beer because it doesn't really fit into any category you can submit add that on the website as a category maybe it's me I'm just going. I keep you know like in hand. It's herbal like it is. Now with so there's no hops they have to add in some other stuff to give the some flavor and I think we're probably getting those ingredients on the nose Yeah so this is a very light beer on the taste immediately I think beer with no hops I'm going to heat this right not the case they whatever they have done in the replacement of hops it kind of it does the job of what hops would do because there is some amount of bitter component to this and I do get those herbal tea like flavors Yes it's really it's really sweet I mean not like overly sweet but I get a little hint just of just kind of like that's. Not
the tropical but I think it's like a honey sweetness Yeah Graham like graham cracker malt. And it tastes a little bit like graham crackers Yeah I think you're absolutely right on that but I think there's a lot of cameo and if Britain was here she
would say camel meal I'm pretty confident of that. But I think this there's that not a Belgian taste but like how you describe the banana there's also some like orange peel Yeah there's a little bit of that fruity in this. But it's also a herb or a little like a stringent it's own like a birthday cake you know what I mean could you get can I get out like sweet kind of they're like a fruit cake yeah yeah fruit cake that everyone gives back at after the holidays they re gift. Your spiel is definitely a good call Jeff. And then when you see a birthday cake it's like the kind of birthday cake that has those little colored Yeah the off the confetti you have the kitty cake confetti cake yeah that's what I'm thinking of it's interesting because I. Beer and we chose this because it has no hops which you know when you when you are growing up learning about beer I mean you're just taught that every beer has hops water basically the four main things right and and so this doesn't have any hops which makes it strange. But I think if I if I'm looking for a beer with no hops like this I would expect them malts to be more dominant and I don't get a strong malt flavor I mean I mentioned the graham crackers I think there's a little bit of Malta nest there but this isn't like a and overwhelmingly malty beer No In fact it's very light in character. Four point four percent is right about what I put it where it's super drinkable super crisp and refreshing and there's not a whole lot of anything that
would be offensive to somebody that you just dragged up the street him try it. You guys get any tea flavors and they call the California T.V. or I mean I get a little bit of that yeah I get a little bit of that too. But I think you're right it's
kind of like in it's like own little class. It's really different I mean it's definitely something I have I mean because it's it's so light it's not us it's not a cider it's. You know it's borderline it's just such a different beer that I mean it's a beer don't get me wrong it's it's interesting and really good to be quite honest and probably known strange as you think a beer would be that doesn't have hops of it I were remarkably surprised I thought I would hate this beer I mean I love hops and I don't hate the spear I mean it's not something I'm going to seek out again because I do love hops but it is much better than I expected when when I'm told I'm going to drink a beer with no hops Yeah next time they should try to leave out a different key ingredient and make a beer with using no water at all. Now let's. Let's see really how that works out. Now let's get into the beer news of the day. So Jeff and my friend Dave Chang sent us an article and it is from data infinity and they do a lot of like. Web info graphics and they talked about the basically the top areas of the country that for beer for craft beer and it was pretty interesting they kind of grouped it by state as far as number of breweries and then by state per capita based on how many breweries there are per person that live there and then the top cities as well so I got them all here. In a guess about what the state within number the highest number of breweries is I have yes California for sure California I'm sorry. What is California. Is that. California six hundred eighty seven breweries according to this Colorado's number two Washington Number three New York number four Oregon number five. Now gets interesting Michigan number six Pennsylvania Texas Florida North Carolina Illinois Ohio Virginia Wisconsin Indiana. Top fifteen right there yeah so that that was the most that was the pure number Burris right here number breweries. What's dead last Alaska now they have a couple. North Dakota only ten in this day or thick. So we can rule that out as our next beer cation destination you know and I kind of feel bad for Hawaii because they're forty eight out of fifty one so. I just feel bad for them because kind of hard a little bit harder for I think in general yeah I mean you know how you get your hops you know all your ingredients and stuff that's the thing about Hawaii like you have to ship everything in or it comes in on the airplane which which increases the cost dramatically for a craft brewery to survive if their pain Weiss's much Frank radiance they're not going to make it so just to put in perspective for everybody Hawaii is forty eight Rhode Island's forty six and they've got two more Burris. In Rhode Island. OK so that's great Obviously California has the highest number of people so we have the highest number of breweries but per capita is what really matters how many breweries are there per one hundred thousand residents in each state number one. Verb Mont. There are eight breweries per hundred thousand residents. Which is pretty crazy. I mean that makes sense I mean I I was thinking it has to be a smaller state obviously and we were in Vermont last year and there's a lot of areas so that's that's going to say a lot I was going to say I was going to guess like Maine or something like that I mean it means Number four Montana is number two Colorado's number three which is a big state with big population they still managed to have a lot of breweries. In there number two overall on the number of breweries per state and then per capita they're right up there so you know they've got a lot. Maine Oregon. Washington Alaska New Hampshire Wyoming Idaho Wisconsin. New Mexico Michigan Iowa Minnesota So California is twenty three. You know we just got a lot of people that too many people had too many people are savage look at Alaska at seven that's pretty impressive. And if that's some cold beer out there they have no people though so it's easy to get a high and. High rating on that per capita so then by city now here's interesting top breweries top cities for breweries Seattle Washington is number one I would guess San Diego now number two is you're going to find really interesting Jeff Chicago Illinois Number two this is the most interest in a city yes Wow So how many I'm surprised how many do we go to in Chicago I mean we went to or maybe I know it didn't seem like a lot I mean I love Chicago it's great city with a fabulous time. And we went to some really amazing breweries and we had a great time at pipe works and half acre but it didn't seem like a city that had a huge number of Burris I know it didn't but then since I've been back I've talked to people who are like wait you don't go to this brewery you know in this one it's like oh no no I mean you know we had limited time and you know so but apparently we missed a lot while we were there number three Denver four Portland five New York City it's amazing that Portland has more than New York City so I think you know per capita you're going to see the discrepancy there we get down to the per capita San Diego Los Angeles Washington D.C. San Francisco Philadelphia Boston Minneapolis Detroit Sacramento number fourteen Indianapolis fifteen so very interesting so cities per cap. To Boulder Colorado thirteen point three breweries pr hundred thousand residents. Bend Oregon Fort Collins Colorado Asheville North Carolina Portland Maine Santa Rosa California six breweries per hundred thousand residents there must not be that many residence I was just there. To breweries Portland Denver Madison Seattle Springfield Spokane. Colorado Springs San Diego Albuquerque so interesting I mean you see a lot of repeats from lists back and forth So definitely you can see where the beer is happening around the country thank you David for sending us that article that was. Interested in data from data affinity Yeah it was a cool I'll post a link on the podcast page on the site so you can go click it they have like heat maps of the countries you can see like the geographical region regions where it's more spot densely populated so check that out it's good to see it in person. Move into the stout section of the show next beer the Vanilla Bean Buffalo sweat Now this is if there's a strange brew this is a strange name and get my beers out of my cooler this is an oatmeal Cream Stout. Five percent. I just have to say one thing I just noticed that this might be the first ever beer that a podcast where a bottle opener was not required. You're right absolutely right they're all cans on this show now. When we started this podcast This is the seventy fourth episode so two years ago we started official number one and then we had thirty test pod cast before that going back and not. A year or so so when we started every single beer was in a bottle three years ago every beer we did on the show was in a bottle and over time there's been a transition more and more cans have been showing up originally it was very rare that we would have a can. And now we have a podcast with all cans because you know cans are cool and they help keep the beer in a better state you know for shipping travelling I mean obviously night they're better to ship and there but they don't allow any light in the keep everything fresh or just a better system of transportation and I think the flavor is better I mean we've had canned beers bottle beers of the same beer and I prefer the taste out of a can it wasn't always that way I mean years ago Cannes had this metallic you know sort of aluminum taste and that's all gone away I mean the technology is so much better that can be yours are very common now absolutely. Yeah I think yeah if you're pouring it into a glass you're not going to now I mean it's it's really good well look at the number of breweries that say to drink there especially the I.P.A. is drink it straight out of the can you get better return of the aroma and the hot flavor if you drink it straight out of the can for a lot of beers a lot of them say that. They designed their beer specifically to be drink from the can so this one we've poured into a glass it's much it's a little more classy That way we have to see what it looks like we do I would say this is a darker color. More of like. Like a brown like a dark cherry color it's like it's was really aren't Cherry It's brown but there are a lot of a little bit of red of there of dark amber cherry. The highlights coming through. Very thin had. Then tanned head. Very Thing No I mean I had if maybe I had a more vigorous pour but I did a little bit more head I mean mine is a pretty creamy colored head so in the aroma the first thing I get is I smell lactose a spear I mean this is a I don't know if Dallas said this but it's an opium Cream Stout. And it smells creamy but I get a lot of lactose on that nose. Some caramel and some butterscotch and maybe is that Hume to coffee Yeah and they're not coffee toffee and the vanilla beans I mean that's that's present for sure yes I love this a row of this beer if I really think about it and I close my eyes it's it it's kind of like hot cocoa. THAT'S LIKE IT BUT little bit of chocolate you know I think the chocolate is fairly muted. I get a little bit of coffee a pretty a pretty large amount of vanilla now it's a creamy sort of rich or medium medium to full bodied beer and there's a lot of complex flavors but it's a very creamy like the mouth feel is sort of silky and creamy It's creamy but
it's it's a little to them to me flavor wise and it's only five percent and I get that for sure this is not a heavy beer it's not a whole like at all it's easy drinker for a beer this dark yeah I actually am surprised with how much carbonation I get in the mouth feel on the first initial taste it's just kind of like Hitcher really which is kind of nice because you kind of like this like refreshing like up front. Brightness from that. And then it and then it's just like really good flavors after that I think this. The really interesting and I trow you know it's certain styles of beer cream Cream Stout like this would be better on I try I think I think that would give it a little bit more you know when you're mentioning the mouth fills a light I think would add some something to that effect of making it a little bit better they also make a barrel aged version of this beer which would be interesting to try we we don't have it this is. This is what we said this is from. Manhattan Kansas that be interesting too to have this in a barrel aged version but I think the nitrate would be really interesting but they're alleged really. Appeals to me I would really be interested in trying this parallage I think this is a little too light in the mouth feel to my liking It's like you put this in a barrel give it a little bit of that little draw a little. Bourbon qualities a little more. Of that Okie type of yeah labor and I think you'd have a better beer you know my opinion yeah I want my buffalo to have a little bit more bite. You know a little bit more get you know this is the sweat on it it does tell us what the nullah bean Buffalo. Interesting name interesting name that's the point of the show I was like to have sweat in the name of my
beer I F. first I thought it's sweet you know but I was misreading it and the spears I was afraid the spirit be overly sweet you know when I when I see old meal Cream Stout with the Ella beings but it's not too sweet I mean there's I some sweet especially not too much and I think the sweetness is what you mentioned the sort of butterscotch I think the Butterscotch is sort of like the lactose flavor that I use that I got in the aroma they're pretty similar but it's I mean for somebody that wants a sort of mild but flavorful. Stay out this is. This is a really good example Yeah absolutely like the barrel age idea because it would be a little bit heavier this is a little too light. For. My liking I want to get kicked in the face by the buffalo. Well that could be arranged. Before we get into the last beer I want to remind everybody that. We have a website beer of the day and each day we feature a beer as the beer of the day so all the six beers on the podcast tonight over the next month or so are going to be featured as the beer of the day and each day we then post that on social media it goes on the website and then if you have signed up on the website we email it to you and you receive it in your mailbox if you put your phone number on file we'll send you a text message with the picture of the beer and a link to the description you can respond that text message and rate the beer you can respond that text message and leave a comment on the website straight from your phone don't even have to go to the website but if you do go to the website you can leave comments and we also post it on social media Facebook dot com slice of the beer of the day every single day we post the beer of the day up there you can leave your comments there on Instagram at beer the day site every single day Jeff posts a picture there and everyone can leave their comments on that and then on Twitter at Peer of the day and we'll post up there and you can read tweet it send it out to all your people and spread the beer of the day gospel if you have a beer that you have in your local area maybe one of the cities that I read on the list here. Boulder Fort Collins Colorado Asheville North Carolina these are all places that we even haven't even been had a beer cation to yet so you could. Post up a beer the day right at the top the side it says add a beer add a beer upload a photo right along. Description and we will feature your beer as the beer the day and then everybody in the beer the day community around the country and the world will have a little insight into what craft beer is like in your particular area so that's going to help us out a lot too and if you do it we will send you a beer the day a pint glass for free straight to your house and you can try your future beers out of the beer that a pint glass so that will be our THINK YOU to you for helping us try new beers out and learn about new beer which is the whole point of this thing and I think we even pay for shipping and handling right pay for everything oh wait there's more. Beat that deal get your buddy to do the same thing and then you've got each have a plank last. It's crazy good idea that's been thrown some beer the day coasters How about that. Nice yeah just post a beer and that way I don't haven't had many beers from Texas or Florida or North Carolina or anywhere so it's good to learn about beer. Throughout the country and you could help us do that. Are Let's get to the last beer of the night this is from forehands Brewing Company in St Louis Missouri the devil's invention. I love the artwork on this Cantu this is one that I brought back from a recent trip to St Louis and this is definitely one of my favorite breweries in St Louis there's this quite a few good ones now but Anne's down one of the best in St Louis I went there I had a great time this was one of my favorites and in St Louis as well I don't think we've had this. Color wise it's very dark. Heart Like a dark brown color dark brown
but there's that Ruby Amber around the edges it's definitely not the dark is beer I've ever had but it is quite dark and it's brown it's not black brown not black. You know this a similar sort of tan skin roundish colors pretty brown color me creamy
but then head. Yeah the very really brown very pungent aroma. All coffee isn't like the Romans just off in. The cold through coffee it like roasted or like you heard a lot so yeah I'm picking up some actually some pepper or some spice you guys get that yeah I do a little bit that scares me like pepper green pepper. Chiles you know I get chili. A little bit I'm hoping went down into this that chili is not there but I mean it's like taking up on that right I do get it a little bit I get why you guys say that to me a smells like when you walk into like a small little coffee shop where they're roasting coffee white when you walk in and that that aroma that just hits you as you open the door that's how this smells to me the smells to me like a coworker that used to put to best go in this coffee. And I took actually got my compass which was and and I also we get a basket now that's what I'm getting to I'm getting that that just for just right now like super roasted like coffee shop like you're walking in but then I guess it's like the spice on the nose. It doing the same beer like I don't get that really I don't get I get it on the nose but in the taste I don't get the pepper her the taste is not there and I taste it it's very coffee forward this is actually. One of the better. Coffee beers I've had I think this is really high quality I there's a bunch of flavors I'm getting it's the roasted ball that I mentioned maybe some would like some charred wood or like toasted wood little bit of an L. and I mean it's to me it takes a little bit like old brew coffee but then you add in some half and half to get that flavor a little bit but some alcohol yeah there's also to me. A dark cherry flavor a dark fruit. It's a sweetness that's in there that's not coffee the coffee is quite pronounced and I like the fact that you're going to make a coffee beer make it taste like coffee you don't want to go into coffee you know might as well go all out on it and they've done that here but. After that initial wave of coffee I get this kind of dark cherry fruit. Type taste in there yeah as well this is a pair really good with some good chocolate cake I think with a beer like this I think we tend to overlook the hops also you know we were very focused on the coffee and roasted malt flavors but I think it's there's some earthiness to this beer or we're big hop fans and I think I get some like Earth in for a hops I think compliment that malt flavor it's interesting to me this is the third beer tonight that is seven point two per cent sort of based on the Space names we should have picked all beers that are seven point two percent yeah that would give you probably could have found I mean we have two hundred and seventy beers out there
in the vaults. So we probably could have found some more seven point two So it seems like a popular A.B.V. this is good I like that with each step I mean it's a type of beer that has your as it were. Forms a little bit in the glass I think it gets better as well I mean this is a super This is like a campfire type of beer or you sit there and you're watching a movie and you just want something to sip on. Well knew go to Melbourne for that you know that's right maybe. But I like the mouthfeel on this it's sort of creamy you know that lactose. Like the milky half and half flavor that I mentioned but it's really slick and I don't know exactly what I mean by that but when I take a sip and like the mouth feel a slick and refreshing in a very full
flavor absolutely full flavored beer no doubt about it. Yeah it's like a little meal meal in a in a glass I mean there's so much stuff going on with this but it's all it's done really well I mean like Dallas a coffee coffee brew I mean they they really they really knocked it out with this I think it's really good and I don't want to drink a bunch of them but I could drink this one can and enjoy it a lot. Are Geoff you want to recap the beers we've had and we'll figure out what our favorite beer of the night has been and so we had six beers tonight from all over the country we started out with the suicide squeeze I.P.A. from Fort George brewery and then the slowest drink at the saddest bar on the sunniest day in the greatest city I.P.A. that was from one empire and then we had the Drunken Master double I.P.A. from Melbourne growing company after the break our Strange Brew was the golden state of mind from ale industries. Then last two beers we had from tall grass Brewing Company the Vanilla Bean Buffalo wet from Manhattan Kansas and we just wrapped up with the devil's invention a coffee Stout from. Forehands Brewing Company in St Louis and I'll spin the wheel and see who goes first thank you. First all right. This is a tough tough choice. I want to be fully transparent and say that I thought this was a good show but there were a few beers that I didn't care for as much but I think there were probably three beers that I I really really enjoyed. But for my choice I think I'd be easy to pick the Melvin because I love that brewery so much the Drunken Master was a fantastic double I.P.A.. I also think I could pick the suicide squeeze but I'm going to go with the last beer the devil's invention because it is one of the better coffee stouts that I've had a Guinness for forehands brewery and one of my favorite breweries in St Louis and I especially like it because I've seen off e infused into a lot of different styles lately I had a coffee I.P.A. the other day that I
thought was really just not very good and I like to see coffee added in two styles where it works well and I think it works well with the stout it was one of the better definitely one of the best off e beers that I've ever had so I just based on. Quality within the style I'm picking the devil's invention Sweeny. This is going to be tough but I'm going to have to go with my beer the day is the golden state of mind believe it or not the strange brew of the day because I just love the fact it was like tropical had some banana some cloven and. It was really smooth and it had zero hops and I was so blown away by like with whoever the guy is that this is just did an amazing job with infusing those flavors in a way to make that taste their way dead so.
Like hats off to that to them ale industries really good job out of Oakland that's my beer the day. The Dragon Master would be easy choice for me because it's so smooth and perfectly balanced and I can't I can't name a negative thing about it other
than the fact that maybe it's too tame you know it's like nine percent but where maybe I want a little bit more something. You know fight me a little bit more you know it was maybe too easy drinking so for me I want to go with the suicide squeeze for my beer the day it had a lot of character it had a lot of tropical hot flavors a good kind of malt to balance that and it was just an interesting beer it had a lot of character so it was notable like I could take a sip of that beer and I would be able to identify it versus one hundred different I.P.A. A's and it did that without being weird or funky it was just good so suicide squeeze my beer of the day. So that's going to finish out our program tonight every single one of these beers had an interesting name. Thought close up with a name song here twelve string yeah by the time the show comes out I'm going to be fishing in Canada British Columbia. So we're record this a little bit early so that we have a show to come out with when I've
gone. But release wise you guys won't notice a difference will be having to show every ten to fourteen days and next time we speak. We'll have a new show Boria probably from just place in Pasadena. And we will talk to you then just want to remind you when this music ends great interview is on i Tunes So just sit in silence just go give us a five rating it's going to help us out we'll see you next time for Jeff Miller Scott Sweeney, I'm Dallas Heliker.. This has been the beer of the day podcast.

~10.00: "Imperial lager," eh? Do you suppose Olde English 800 could move upscale by relabeling itself as one?Leave a Comment:
