Oktoberfest is officially here and so it's only fitting that we dedicate a show to Oktoberfest beers. We try 8 different Oktoberfest offerings, both from Germany and the US. We also review the history of the festival and read comments from the listeners.
The beer of the day podcast contains adult language adult beverages and brief nudity listener discretion is advised the day world headquarters in California. This is the beer of the day pod cast tonight is October says two
thousand and sixteen our show dedicated to October best which starts in just one day from the time this podcast is being recorded tomorrow and we have eight different including five from the USA and three from where October Fest originates Germany. Joining
me tonight. Joel Minor, Britton Minor, Kiera Hopkin, Steve Williamson and our returning champion a writer and photographer from Pasadena California, Jeff Miller. Wait, I thought Jeff was a nude model used to be. He's a jack jack of all trades he's a
brief nude model so October Fest beers we have a lot of them to try and we did a show on this last year called October fest of this was the name of the episode right around this time and we had I think this many beers on that show and we're not repeating any These are all brand new ones we haven't tried so let's get right into the first one we're going to start out here in this state of California. We have from Firestone Walker Brewing Company there. Oktober fest. It's a Mars and beer. Oktober fest I would guess this is aged in oak that would make sense it is not actually I think it's just a tribute to Paso Robles where there's a lot of oak trees. Well the misled us. There is an oak tree on the can I think this is one of the few Firestone
beers I have never had. Well there's a first time for everything. I call it the crystal clear. What's the alcohol percentage on this. So it's pretty low. It's only five percent. Well probably here and then a lot tonight. Smells really sweet. It has
kind of a light copper color. Maybe or a little bit orange ish. I got pretty good headed everybody else get pretty significant fingers were started out it's dissipating quickly. Yeah I'm really enjoying the malts on this. I mean I think all these beers are going to be pretty malty but I think the malt flavors here are really flavorful and interesting. Yeah it's it's very bready and has a really good like light we flavor to it that is nothing that you would get from a traditional like macro Brewery here in the U.S. but it has the same similar mouth feel but just has a ton more flavor. Normally when you get this much flavor you're expecting to have a more intense mouth feel like a sugary feel it's got a lot of malt flavor without that intensity of sugar overwhelming it. Yeah I would agree I was expecting it. It smells pretty sweet and salty and I was expecting it to be a little bit sweeter. I think it's pretty crisp has a curse finish and pretty much everything that Joel said as far as like the body mass and there's a lack of sweetness there that I kind of enjoy. If you're at like a football game and it's like in the middle of fall and you have a choice between like a macro brew or this beer you're going and you can like you can really enjoy a football game in this beer and not feel. Like you're taking in too many calories. Yes and two thoughts. First a few weeks ago we had the summertime show the summer beers very light crisp blogger's the time drinkers. But you give this me
instead of any of those beers I think I'd take this one because it has a little bit more multi miss a little bit more of a caramel flavor to it a little more body and I think I just enjoy the style of beer more than those light lagers I'll be the dissenter as usual I consider us like a like a light October fest. That's like the the light version of what Professor appear to me it's just taste very crisp and I mean it's so cold but I don't get a lot of flavor from it. My second thought is the beer that everyone buys on October Fest season is Sam Adams October Fest which is so over sweet and Omer malt it. It's it's an almost unreadable for me and. I see in the fridge I will not grab one and I think this is the antithesis of that beer. You know Britain my wife she likes the lighter beers and you know we had the summer session in the last podcast we did we had a lot of summer light beers. And normally you think of like knowing like a lot when you're drinking those beers but with this one. It's like you're raking leaves and you want to bring your wife a nice crisp October beer is the wondering I think I like this one because like I said you know we're talking about the summer beers that we tend to associate it with certain activities that
we're doing so. Like you know this is after I mow the lawn on a hot day this is what I would want to do and just did like the raking leaves analogy but I think that this beer has like the flavor profile that I like of some of the light summer beers. But it's more substantive and that's like in body and also in like the flavor profile I think that everything is thoughtful for an October Fest beer. But I like it. I think it's good. I think what I like is Joe mentioned this of the beginning is the mouth feel it's really sort of dry and powdery and I think it just really accent choice the flavor is in the spear and I'm glad we started with this because it only five percent. It's light but I just think there's a ton of flavor in the spear. Yeah I was sure there is no oak involved in this we are. I just looked it up to confirm I could like see this being aged like it's has That's yeah goes back to reminding me of leaves. Yeah well I think we did a fine job on that one didn't have any interesting beers as we wanted to mention I mean I'll mention that I had the new stout stone. There's no parking in Wheaton and I really like that here you know it's one of the best outs. I've ever had and what I thought though I mean I was trying to compare to last year's version I don't have one obviously to compare it to and I really liked it. Last year but this one tasted a lot like black licorice which I normally don't like but it was really interesting and complex in this beer and you know I had some fruit flavors too I think there are some banana and it was just yeah I mean it's one of those beers that we could talk about for ten minutes with all kinds of various waivers. So you know I bought another bottle because I'm going to stick it in my wine fridge and age it until this winter. I think it's a very good winter beer. I think right now is a great time to pick it up if you see it I will look for that don't want to need. You stop by kneedeep when he was at work the other day and he brought home stout Tele which is like one of my new favorite beers. So it's kind of like chocolate hazelnut Porter. But I think it's a little bit better. How's a little bit more like robust hop profile so it tastes like very kneedeep but it's still got like the chocolate hazelnut. Study quality that I will definitely be drinking all winter and I hope that they bottle because they're not currently bottling it. And that's high praise better than C.H.B. it's really good and the good news about a lot of these breweries and we first saw it happen in Tampa. What was the brewery that went to our city. Yes Our city is the user's Crowder's where they're like the machine that takes that thirty two ounce can. So you can grab any beer that you want.
There have been pour it from the tap into a can and just sealed off and so I was able to seal I'm often the first thing I asked was how long is this beer going to last in this can and they said usually anywhere from like ten to fifteen days in a crowd
or so. And it lasted us about four hours. Oh you were since save them. Yeah so we we enjoyed it thoroughly to be at home so excellent Our Let's move into the next beer. We're staying in the United States but we're moving half way east to be to Springs Louisiana to try their October first beer. This is an amber log or. Yeah I mean. Well all of these are like on Mars and lager but this one specifically says Amber lager. I don't know why they do that I would imagine just the earth. It's best paper
fried chicken. I would imagine. Well I think you know they're just using the American terminology they also spelled October fest with the C I'm not a kid. So they're trying to they're just trying to appeal to those those down there in Louisiana. But you see and this beer looks and smells extremely similar to the fire. So I walked around we just had. Yeah I bet if you poured a glass like such other and then like to the actual full game you would be able to exact same color same color same. Yes melt everything Heller same like you know I got a lot more on the nose in this one. I don't know. This one's nose is a lot more fragrant to me but I just took a sip and it is extremely sweet or I mean we've had some upbeat of beers lately and you know I think they tend to be a little us on the sweet side at this one is very sweet. I guess the question is does it add or subtract from the quality of the beer verses prior we've had I think it depends on what you're into as a beer drinker for me it subtracts I like a little more dry a little less sweet. And so this one isn't appealed to me as much but a lot of people like sweeter beers and might prefer this one I would definitely rather have this one over the fire. So I like that the sweet upfront and a finish is sweet. But never overpowering to be either point but you definitely you can tell it's sweet though I mean it's no doubt about it is a kind of a flat line. You know but it starts off on the initial sip and then it maintains that same taste all the way through and then I realize tapers off at the end I realize that it doesn't matter what style of beer. We're drinking I typically have the exact opposite feeling to see. Well it's hard drinking beer everyone has different tastes so this one is sweeter than the previous beer but this is a little bit more aligned with what I would expect from an October fest here and I'm not knocking the Firestone one because I liked it it just wasn't necessarily what I expected from the style this one is is anybody getting like a very slight hop on the finish or and or floral like extremely Flora on the finish. I think on all these obviously there's hops in all these beers but you know that it's a very it's a style that has very reserved hops. So it's going to come out in flavors and spices. I think more. Yeah and I do get a live. A bit of that spiciness hidden underneath the sweetness there's like another layer under there. Hidden down there and I think that's what you're referring to. So there's a very and I mean so light not Meg slash scramble a flavor to this beer. And I actually like this beer more than the last one. Only because from an October Fest standpoint. I'm thinking this is a lot closer to what I would expect from that type of beer. Whereas the previous beer we had from Firestone was more of like a fall enjoyable beer. That's very light lager tasting of some sort but this one has a lot more complex see that you would get from some that you're looking for that's getting closer to Thanksgiving versus October but still it's got a little more spice to it a little more festive Yeah. I was trying to figure out what I was like I know the flower like it's so floral to me that it's either like jasmine or orange blossom not citrusy but orange blossom like the actual skin like a biscuit do but I'm really getting something floral at the end I want to throw one more in there. Let's go with honeysuckle nowadays maybe a little that some actually looking for
justification here or some sort of like somebody agree with me. Does anybody get that craftily seriously does anybody get that crab or Les flavor from this or I just get sweet caramel which is not that different flavor from a which is a little more cinnamon. I guess. Yeah and there's a little bit of spice in this which could be that so I could see that individual I think when you made your first comment like it made me think this appears also a little nutty like there's some nut players in this and my
opinion has changed a little bit. I don't actually think it's a sweet as I first thought after like four or five steps. It's not quite as sweet I thought it was really really sweet and it's not. It's sweet but not to say it won't be the sweetest beer we have tonight and I think it's I think it was just sweet in comparison to the beer and we should have. I should have said more chatted set of or what do they want. And let's zoom into the next beer. We have our first beer from Germany from urging Germany this is urgent urging or it's a lager kind of a traditional October Fest style beer. I remember one of the very first forty niner games I went to I had air dinner Heth there with some sea salt and vinegar chips tailgating. I just thought it was the best thing in the world. It was like October time football season and I was like this is beer football right here now urging your moves a little bit away from the traditional amber color of October Fest beers this is more of a yellow colored straw colored and there's some cloudiness here it seems a little more like they're half a wizen are those type of why Spears then other Marson arc over fist Piers. I don't know if Jill gave me a super vigorous poor but I have like a one hand head didn't even think to entertain and the very frothy had a lemony Oh yeah yeah totally. Lemony It smells very different from the other two. I mean it's interesting. I like the show because we mix it up and we have both German I mean German and American styles
I mean we're in the craft beer business this is really the only show where we have international beers. Let's call that we're doing this and comparing them. So at that Vietnamese show we did. I think we just made Bobby sandwiches I don't know that was a we knew about guys. OK and the ice. One. There was some opium of all in the Belgian So your other half. Speaking of Belgian though I. This gives me like a Belgian similarity here. I can't even I was going to say yes I don't think you know you always disagree with me. I agree with you here. It's almost not sour but on the verge. It does seem more tart than the in comparison to the last one we just had totally This one's kind of you mean. That little pucker little bit. Oh so great. This is like it's sweet but with that little tartness So it's like it's like a sweetheart Candy Spelling it out. Yeah everything you guys are saying is spot on. I could not agree more. The lemon citrus the tart the Belgian style. They were perfect like your plate is not really a style beer. Now I think it's a little bit more. I don't want to I hesitate to use the word use the word syrup The Because it's not but in comparison to the other two that seem very crisp like this one lasts longer like the aftertaste last a lot longer. FULLER Yeah just lingers a little bit. Yeah. Here's what I find interesting and Steve made this comment at the beginning but I think it's kind of telly and went on the back of this bottle where it talks about ensure it
references that they have the number world's number one half Why isn't when this is not there have to wisen I think that's I think this is a seal so I have a bicycle and I'm going to put that on the back you're a label on a lot of sense and that's what they're famous for it's what they're marketed for their style Yeah I don't know that they need to put it on the spot. Although when it's not their health wise I think that the the point of having it on the on the labels that they're saying like we make it great. You have everyone else or have tried this beer we want to impress you with this is well this is like just absolute advertise Yeah I think I honestly just think it. Might be like their tagline They impressed me. Gotcha incoming transmission. You've got mail. Comments this week I got an email today from beer the day user Maltese Falcon multis I like it. I like that. He sent an email to feedback a beer. The day dot com Hey guys just wanted to say I've been listening to your podcast for about half a year now and I've loved every episode has got to be wanted. And like we're not that good. I'm one of them not living on a problem when I'm in the Midwest so finding regular beer reviewers who make sure to cover the entire US including the
flyovers is awesome. I really want to send you some beers as a thank you for everything that you do is it OK How many should I say and make sure everyone gets one word choice of the two. That's from Paul at Burr Oak Brewing Company in Columbia Missouri. Oh and I guess. Jeff and I were driving from St Louis to Kansas City and we stopped off at Burr Oak Brewing Company in Columbia and we tried I think pretty much all their beer if we brought back a bunch with us. And I still remember Darkstar it was like a black culture Yeah it was really good and then they had that little email that we brought back and I really like that one. It tasted like like that cereal like Fruit Loops or fruity pebbles or something that was such a unique beer. It was one
of the most unique beers and yeah I like quality on. So yeah. All you want to sin is beer. Feel free. We will read try them right here on this pod cast we'll put them on the website feature them as the beer the day we love to get beer from different places from throughout the country that we don't get to go to frequently. So you know we get to California centric here because that's the beers that we have available and that's why we take trips in two weeks we are going to the. East Coast. I'll
talk more about that later but that's just for the sole purpose of trying beers in different parts of the country other comments beer the day user error in one thousand nine hundred eighty one from San Francisco who read tweets us a lot on Twitter. He commented on the podcast I referred to earlier cold beer on a hot summer day. Guys I have been waiting to hear one of my purchases through Amazon dot beer the day dot com mentioned during the commercial and now I've gotten two mentions in a row. I am the owner of the redness Bresso machine and the refillable coffee pots. You can also leave comments on Facebook at facebook dot com slash the beer the day you can tweet us at beer the day and you can send us a message on Instagram at beer of the day site or email us feedback at near the Day dot com All right let's get into the next beer. We have. Moving back to the United States from Downingtown Pennsylvania victory Brewing Company. This is their best beer or it's one of those beers that I could smell before
even poured in the glass that I had a bad time out of it. Me Jeff sorry it's good. It was more coppery then it's definitely darker than the first two in many shades darker than the third it's the clear again. Mostly they're all pretty I think the last one was probably the one that was close to hazy this smells like a mult so small it's the melody. Well I am past ticket almost smelled like alfalfa earth back and I was thinking something grassy as well I don't know that smells like sounds like great grains. It's like if you cut the lawn and left it in a pile and it got rained on you know it smells like the stuff you feed horses that was last time you cut the lines. I'd never have but if I had a magic. Yeah this morning I can hear from the others. So this one is also called an amber lager by the way I get kind of a graham cracker taste from this one it's multi And but there's a bread in this to it. Yeah it's interesting. This is the most this gets dollars you described it is kind of like either graham cracker e are maybe a little bit gender bready I'm not getting so much of the sweetness but what I'm getting is the bready. And it's like one of those I wouldn't say right broad but it's like a ripe cracker where you're getting like the raw you with it but it's also that like super dry like desiccate being were like dries out your mouth kind of thing difficult as one later. Yeah it's not as as like. Dark is right. Bread like it's there's some sweetness here but it's not it's like a brown sugar sweetness. I think it's perfect. Honey you know it's Honey honey in the finish. Would you say Steve before that I think your pumpernickel is perfect because it does it dries it has a little bit of dry your mouth. It has a sweetness to it. So earlier this week I went to a farmer's market and I had some organic honey and it was raw so this reminds me a lot of that has a lot of those flavors and taste that you get from an organic raw honey. Steve you mentioned that it's got the honey flavor to it. I think it was always just I think chef. I'll give you credit Jeff you're right. Every now and then there was me. Yeah I can see what you're taught it's almost the exact same color as the honey that he's talking about too and so we live in Fair Oaks California which is a little bit rural a little bit City all at the same time and the honey that you bought was like wildflower honey right well yeah and I almost wish you hadn't said that because just like the honey where I said it's almost like there's a little bit of mint like I'm tasting that in the beer now I can actually I mean this beer is a little a little syrupy and not in a bad way but it sort of reminds me of like you know a cinnamon roll like the glaze that is on the cinnamon roll that's a little a little thick and sweet. That's really what the Spirit Tastes like to me. I like it. I think this is delicious. I'm sticking with the Rye cracker. Yeah I mean you know you say honey it's the mineral a sort of mineral I think that means it gives the impression of a very sweet you're I don't think it's that sweet I get more than flavor out of it I get more of that alfalfa I mean you know there is some of that honey quality to it. But I taste a lot of earthy flavors. It has. Like and has like a cooling effect on my tongue which is weird and which is where I think I'm describing doesn't taste like mint ball but it does have like a cooling effect that menthol Yeah. But you're right. Well like I said we're not doing a commercial today so when we come back for more beers to try to from the United States into from Germany. So stick around we'll be right back here on the beer they project. Our next beer Ballast Point Brewing Company. We have did ring here. This is a Mars in the lager from Ballast Point and I say that last about this point yesterday there in San Diego very dark much much darker than all the rest. We've had but you're going to stay mud but that it's kind of the color that it is the same thing but
colored copper very close to the lot of head. Really I had very little had on the head. Well I think I think yeah I think Jills a vigorous poorer. But it's a paying very quickly. So it's I don't think it's maintaining well so the dark copper color caramel had its most pretty multi this has the that karma hop smell profile flavor of the smell but I would expect in the you know October fest like German style beer. Yeah I think I agree and I would add that I think it's most a little bit more molasses see but I think that describes the taste pretty well. Well molasses see. Just looking at the consistency of it on the glass it looks a little syrupy I haven't tasted it yet but it looks just a little bit there. I'd say this is in the category that
we had with the first beer. I think it was a tree there. Yeah it's quite sweet malt Maybe I'm crazy as I don't get sweet I actually get a little bit of tart. But to me it's kind of like a little sour ish on the tongue afterward. Yeah a little bit like that. Yeah it lingers but I don't get any tartness. There's a little bite at the end when I get I really don't I don't I wouldn't consider this Pierce we'd all be a little my opinion. Coriander Now there's some spice I mean you know it's not just me. It's some kind of spice it was sweet initially but the more you drink it the more it darkens up. I'm trying to figure out if part of the bite is the carbonation I don't think so because I'm still going to stick by my first initial reaction which was it has a lot of flavor it just seems watery the feel and the tongue feels watery the look of how it is in the glass looked a little surgery and I think that spice I guess maybe sentiment is anybody else got that little touch of it. Yeah. Well the problem is is it is a little bit sweet and there's not have a lot of complexity to it it's just very underwhelming it. It does have a little bit of that water flavor but it has that sweetness and bright flavor to it. So you know it's something that's coming from like a you know Mars in style lager but it's just not very impressive because it's just not very complex and that's what we're having a hard time describing it because it's got like sweetness in a broad flavor but there's not much to it. I'm curious do you think it's like a like a metallic or a stringent. Flavor. I'm not getting astringent but I do get metallic for sure but I also feel like this beer from an October Fest and point is is made for the masses. I mean it really is not going to have any flavor that's off putting. It's just very simplistic sugary ball T. bread be a little bit of that Tobar yeast flavor that you want from a not so we're fast kind of style beer but in a very moderate amount. Yes exactly. So I think a lot about this point beers are better. This one is not bitter but it is very acidic. And it's a lingering acidity that I'm not big at that hour it is now time for October fest. Q. and A The first question when is October first is here September but there are some to the number seventeen through October third the festival last sixteen days. It's the case that Saturday in September is why is October fest called October Fest we're actually begins in September just celebrating the harvest no end in the correct historical background. The first arc over fest was held in the year eight hundred ten in honor of the Bavarian crown prince Ludvig marriage to princes Teresa bombshell seventy hild and Wagner house from the Fox beautiful name to the festivities began on October twelfth eighteen ten and ended on October seventeenth with a horse race in the following years a celebration were repeated and later the festival was prolonged to move forward into September by moving the festivals that allowed for better weather conditions because in September nights were warmer the visitors were able to enjoy the gardens outside the tents and stroll over dive by bison or the fields. Much longer without feeling chilly. Historically the last October first weekend was in October and this tradition continues into present time. What is Di Weiser fields. I think it's like it'll bite the locals in Munich on the refer to October fest as Di Weiss and bison because of its location. There are some of Weiss which was named after Theresa bond shots and killed the bird houses. So that's where that comes from. All right well how about we get into that next beer. This is October Fest original name bar Steiner invites starring Deutschland synchronised bottle of us. Practice that they can years to perfect this beer is point three three leaders. Haha. Smells good. This has a much more or like McKinney. Well it looks like a lager. It's the second lighter touch later. This is the know it's a brown bottle. It's a very see through on skunk and it's flavor smell it is donkey. It smells like a multi Heineken I don't like donkey I taste like corn and sweetness. If a skunk blasted it. Oh it tastes much better than it smells. Oh wow. It tastes good. I mean it's it's a take all that it does does it does smell like a skunk. I do get the corn taste of a German lager. This is very little of the Carmel malts that the marts and style October first beers are known for so it's kind of a more of a longer like October Fest beer than most of the others we've had tonight. I would say it's less sweet than some of them that we've had to. Yeah man. This is it you think it's weak. It's a different kind of sweetness this smells like dirty bomb water but it tastes it smell so different from what the taste is it's YOU SEE THIS IS THE BIGGEST like diversity from a smell to taste I've ever had beer. Well because usually when you taste it. Then you pick up that smell or you smell and pick up the taste of it and you're kind of integrating both of them and I'm not I'm not getting that skunky taste but I could definitely small as I'm taking it but it doesn't translate not at all on your palate road since it was bottled in eight hundred ten. So this is that's well I still I know it was very well it is the original though so there's that explains the smell. Yes is like another beer that I would describe as subtle there's not a lot going on but what is going on is reserved and drink a bowl. Well I mean I think
that I mean literally. OK So I mean compare this back to the Firestone right they're both literally called October festival Firestone's October fest. They're both pure style both light colored light bodied this has a way more flavor. This has more flavor than the Firestone Yeah it's a completely different beer that like the Firestone is what Americans try to brew in the art over fist tile in the two German October Fest beers we've had so far aren't even that style we had one that was more of a half a wizened then an October Fest Mertz in style and then we had this one October Fest Metson Yes but it's more of a German longer than it is a horrible multitude October Fest beer in those terms yet doesn't have those Carmel No no I think when we get to the HOF Well it's going to be you'll see a difference. I do want to clear disclosure here and I don't know if that makes a difference whether it's like a translation thing or if that's really what they're trying to put it doesn't say merits a. On the bar Steiner bottle. It says merchant type. So I don't know if that makes a difference like whether they are trying I think you just play shell Linney that this is different than an actual marathon. No think about it for a second like a so we say
Belgian style right because they're not Belgian because they're not Belgian but it's very well is not American. It's just a maybe they're trying to be very similar to but not quite a mare maybe the reason is maybe it's maybe like champagne only true. MARZAN is can come from Munich. It's very likely that in Germany this the word style doesn't exist or yes type of saying what type of beard is this is our brand of Star label and this is the type of beer agree with Steve I don't mean our it was
interesting one. Let's get to the next one will come back home here to California Northern California Chico and we have October Fest twenty sixteen from Sierra Nevada all about. Tell us some background on this. This is different every year right. But
they keep brewing this with in collaboration with the German brewery. Yeah every year they go over to Germany and they brew this with a traditional German Brewery one of the eight or however many there are that true. German breweries this year they've
partnered with Mars Brough one of Germany's most highly regarded brewers to create a golden hued festival rear right here in the USA. Using traditional techniques heritage German barley and the record hop for Idol in nearly forgotten German grown hop. We've created the most authentic take on the style this side of the Atlantic. It smells like a less intense version of our standing at the bar stereo that I just recently had just less. Dense. It's like you know there's no aroma from this. It's much lighter slight like this. That's kind of. There's an aroma doesn't have much more subtle than the music here. I bet most of those have no hops and most most most like German hops have like a floral characteristic and we say that a lot of a lot of our shows but that's why a lot of these have like a floral hoppity taste the Dallas didn't I think was two years ago you and I go to Sierra Nevada and we actually tasted October Fest beer from the actual thirty thousand gallon tank off the pig's tail from the actual brewery. We were there. It was last year a year ago a year ago and I remember I was pretty impressed with the freshness of it. I feel like this beer that we're having I think we're in a good situation because we're having it early on in the season. It tastes very fresh. Yeah it does not have any like nasty bitterness or anything. I think when these beers sit to law and they tend to get a little bit better and they get like this nasty stale taste. I think all the ones that were having tonight are pretty fresh because we're still in September drinking in October Fest beer and last year's October fest here and about a beer. It was much more amber color than this. So these beers are different and I think that there is just different styles of the style different types of the style and there's a wide range of what you can call a October Fest beer. So this one particular I think it's unique in that I felt like I got a little bit of a sitter so Roma in the first and second sips I was like oh this he's like a lemon bar like super lemony in like the powdered sugar type of sweetness. But he also if I had described this beer as not. If if there was somebody who was really thin layer with October Fest tile beers. I would say his beer tastes very clean it just has it does just taste very clean. It's very it's just not off putting. It's got some good yeast flavors that German style yeast. It's not overwhelming it's got a good aroma. It's got a little bit of a sugar a little bit of sweet and like. Just like a good coating on the mouth feel where it's it's not dry it's a little bit of sweetness and sugary feel to the mouth. I think to back that up. What I would say my opinion is Piers that it's very well crafted and I mean you can taste the care they put into it. I think of all of us had so far. This one has the most complex flavors of it like hands down. I would agree. So something that is came to mind here to that when they started up. They had some guy come from
Germany and build them a brewery because they didn't know how to do it here. They didn't have the materials they didn't have the huge copper that. And so I think they had to ship those over here from Germany. Now Syria that is huge. They're making a million barrels a year but these German breweries are only eight different ones I think and they've got to be pretty big to be able to put several of these beers in every single store in America every Bev Mo every. Total one and more every grocery store has several of these you know German beers. So they have to have some pretty big production to crank in about you know maybe it's not flying off the shelves like this here in a vat is so they probably don't have have to be that big but it's got to be a pretty big operation they have there and they've been doing it for you know hundred years. When we want to remember when we want to the tour to know about all the can. Troels of all the dials and they were in German right. I think some of the older equipment it was even written in German. Yeah I was going to say I was like the labels on the buttons and stuff was all in German. You know on the old stuff. Yeah well that's interesting in that you know I think it's good that every year they try something different and but try to keep it authentic by working with a one of those old German breweries I think this beer out of all of them so far is the most well balanced and maybe that's just because it sirrah Nevada. They're known for their hobby beers but I get a little more hops in this one versus the rest. So I just feel like this is a more well balanced person as the rest that tend to be a little bit multi-year and now are October Fest fun fact. Jeff you want to hazard a guess of
what a beer costs in October Fest this year. This is like a leader right or the seller leader is a cheap or expensive the leader Bill beer. It's a huge celebration commercial thing now. So that's expensive ten euros. Wow sorry. It's ten fifty for twelve US dollars approximately. That's a lot but it's a leader beer that should last you like ten fifteen minutes. That's better than most concerts out here though. Yeah I mean that's a tall Canada baseball game. You know that's that's really not that bad and better beer. Yes And you know I went and played golf in the day we paid thirteen dollars to play golf. After five o'clock it was like the Twilight special and our beer cost just ten dollars almost as much and he asked me specifically what do you think the price difference is what is the difference and I said two dollars is correct. Where is it where who's in the end and you can be had. You know Barry and he then Drew. Mr Hamilton where are you. If he's not coming. I think that's a really fair price. I mean there's a bar here in Sacramento. That's been open a couple of years now there are German style bar and you can get a liter of beer there and it's about ten bucks. How many ounces are in a leader beer thirty three fluid ounces. So it's like two full pints. All right let's move into the last beer of the night from HOF bro. This is their October fest there in Munich I'm going to green bottle. Hopefully not skunky so I smelled this when I cracked open the bottle it does smell skunky and a little bit like a Heineken that's been sitting in this side of one hundred ten degree Sacramento weather pouring mist and then it is probably the lightest beer of the night and super clear pretty like dents head. I don't like what you're seeing aired injure I do. Yes this is definitely of I'm it's there that I this is a stronger spirit than I clocking in at six point three percent. You know what to watch out which is your I think because it's pretty darn clear it's one of the clearest
pairs we've had so normally you know at a ton of bolts to get the A.B.V. way up. But this one is clear and it looks very light like a like a lager or even American micro beer. So I'd say this is most like the var STEINER It's a it's more of a longer style beer. I don't know if I put those side by side if I could tell these apart. I mean they're all lawyers I mean it's less like on Mars and caramel it's more of a golden colored and lager taste horn little bit of sweetness. But not so much of the you know getting the amber quality. I keep saying Heineken tonight and I'm sorry that I keep thinking to can to night but this one tastes like kind of like Heineken on steroids like it's a sure you guys don't have last year's. Beer sitting in the fridge for for the last year. Nestle Conky just got these and there are you are using a different experience. Jeffery. You know maybe you got a little straw maybe you got a fresher batch. But it's I mean it's sitting away from the microphone and I can still smell it. But can you hear it. Maybe if I listen really hard at it. Arms I mean that's one of the things we have to deal with here is that these were shipped you know who knows months ago and they had to travel across the ocean and you don't know how they were and cared for in the meantime until us. And so it avoids Somali pirates you have no idea if it wasn't hot cold like him a really strange son exactly our breweries here see to that has a problem controlling the quality of their shipping from here to Chicago or from here to the east coast and it's always a problem for them for the Germans to ship in here. Good luck you know what it's been through so I feel like this in general is a fairly standard tasting lager. That is a little bit more like it has more fortitude. It's like a little bit stronger than your standard tasting lager it lasts a little bit longer than a normal lager like it really like lingers it's like sticking around and it's a little bit bitter on the finish. It's not a terrible beer but I just I don't know why this is considered an October Hesper Well I mean I don't know I think our opinion of October Fest is very narrow a view that we think of Americans style October fest. Carmel Balts you know a little bit of spice in there but I told her fest means that these are the brewers who bring their beers to October Fest celebration October Fest is a isn't necessarily a flavor. Yeah. Here I agree with you completely family style it's just the yeah beers that they bring they only make three of them. And they're all very similar in that this is all they mix Absolutely. I like the flavor of this. I mean it has that Britain on earlier mentioned acidic and it's as I think a very nice acidic quality to it. It kind of tones down the happiness but you can still taste hops. I think as a good mall profile I like it it's gone on and on and on and this is the thing that I dislike about the bitterness that you can't get rid of like once you've had it. You keep tasting it for an hour and now I I'm tasting like B.-O. for an hour. This is highly overdramatic sized but that's like what I don't like about I.P.O.'s and that's what I don't like about this beer is that I cannot get the aftertaste out of my mouth. You know the finish is a little overpowering. Yeah. But I've said this before about other beers but they've been making this since fifteen eighty nine. This isn't me probably Ricky so but it's probably the exact same recipe. So they're probably doing something right. I think we have to go drink it over there. Yeah I did it. Maybe you're better more than any of us should let it warm up and see if it changes right like beers do change depending on temperature and Mandy they drink a lot of there's warm. Yeah I wonder if we should let it warm up and see if it opens something up or gets rid of some of that maybe it'll get rid of some of the skunk you miss or if you try that the rest of us are going to figure out what our favorite or that it was but. Joel you want to take it through and recap them. Yeah so the first beer we had was the October Fest Mars in from Firestone walker and then the next one was he were fast as well from a bit of Brewing Company and then we had the earning sorry urging
your urging her Germany. It was a lager and then we had the fest beer Arbor. Amber Lager from Victory Brewing Company in Pennsylvania and then we had. Dead dead ringer Mars in from Ballast Point Brewing Company. Followed by the October fest from is a Mars in style from sorry how we say this virus started in our far Steiner state or Germany and then we had the two thousand and sixteen not to refresh from Sierra Nevada and then last was the HOF brought to profess from the HOF bra Munich. From Munich Germany spin the wheel and says go in for who is it. Joel don't wanna. All right so I'm going to go with the best beard from Victory Brewing Company. So I really like to spirit was earthy it had that I think as Steve said it. Alfalfa he. Complexity to it had that cooling effect on my tongue and it was just a very impressive and complex beer and I would definitely go after this one again. So normally for me I think it's a little bit easier to choose a beer of the day because there are quite a few that aren't up my alley whether their IP is a reverend. So it's a little bit easier for me to decide this show is a little bit harder I liked a lot of the beers that we had tonight. You know I got to tip my hat to the Oktober fest the October fest for better but I agree with Joel the fest beer from Victory bring company was exactly what I wanted it was earthy it was grassy it was multi And that's the one that I really like tonight. No collusion. I'm trying here a while. It's kind of a dead giveaway on this one and usually I have a little bit hard time picking out which ones that like and I wrote. Over the years to see like everything but this one I'm on the go at the Oktoberfest from Firestone Walker was just an easy drink kind of simple fall summer brew just one of those I think you can get away with drinking throughout the day and not feel like it's too thick to finish just generalize I enjoyed all day long. It's transitional and it's a transitional time for me. These are definitely in my style of preference but I'm shocked that my favorite beers year end of Atta. Because that is normally not my favorite brewery. It was just well crafted You can tell they put some love into it and great great flavor profiles so I'm going with this hearing about it. All right well I'm going to agree with Kira on this one fist first I'm Walker very smooth beer. I like to have a little bit of that amber color in my October Fest beer and this one had that it had a very good balance of the malt and slight hops little bit of the darker molds in there so I enjoyed that when a lot and it was an age joke but it was smooth like it was so I'll take that just settle this. It's well it comes down to my top two. I really enjoyed the victory
fest beer but my beer of the day is the Firestone Oktober fast and so I have to agree with Allison Cura for me this beer what I enjoyed was the dry powdery mouthfeel it has it's like unique Firestone taste that I really enjoy at the crispy fish. It was the first beer was the lowest alcohol percentage but this is the the most flavorful drink of all beer out of all of these so. I'm going to Firestone I'm curious as to how many times on all these podcasts you've done number fifty six. But the lowest
alcohol beer one beer the day. Not as you often I bet it's a first time not to mention I feel like there's a good like range of choices that we've all picked as our beer the days and on top of that. The second place beer was would also be hard for me to decide. I don't know if it's the same for all the rest of you but it was like it was really hard to pick a bit like there are some there are some good beer. I think we learned the most important thing is that I should not recap the B. years. I
thought you defied you know we've learned our previous shows you should opt for the I've got better at that there are only four or five mistakes. You know I think freshness is about fifty percent of what a beer is and I just don't think that we got the freshest beer from the German selections tonight and I think that kind of. I didn't work in their favor contrary last year. In the October Festivus show. I think several of us picked a German beer as the beer of the day so it seemed like last year the German selections we had were better more fresh though. I guess I can vary as well. I think the song was written about October. Well in September and October is here October sixth. We will be going to the northeast Boston New Hampshire Maine and
