On today's episode we compare three pale ales (pale, IPA and DIPA) vs. three stouts (caramel, breakfast, and imperial) from throughout the country. In the news, we discuss a beer made from sewer water, plus comments from the listeners.
This is the Beer of the Day Podcast. From Beer of the Day World Headquarters in Elk Grove, California, this is the Beer of the Day Podcast. Tonight we have three beers from the pale side and three beers from the dark side. And a double I.P.A. in the first half and then the second half off the. Imperial. From all across the country tonight from California. Joining me tonight Britton Minor, Joel Minor, Steve Williamson and Jeff Miller. Sixty nine who that we've been here this many times fantastic is going to the first beer of the night we have from toppling Goliath Brewing Company in decor Iowa this is the their X. hops series gold pale ale. I've been looking for this I mean they make pseudo sue which is considered top
five at least top ten pale ales in the country by most people so this is you know going to be good I imagine this is a nice bright yellow color. Kind of a thin white had pretty big bubbles on there. And it's slightly cloudy not super cloudy you know I think it sounds a little weird to say I like the color of the sphere but to do it it looks very appealing to me. And I think it's the perfect amount of haziness and brightness and Leah Roma is appealing to me it's really hot forward very citrus Lemon. Even like a little bit of like soapy fresh the fresh soapy type of hops smell you know like I get a little bit of honey too I get that also I was going to say I was a pineapple I mean there's a lot of very unique fruit flavors in this aroma definitely smells like it be something that's going to be juicy. And there's a little bit use characteristic to the taste but it has a nice dry finish to it yeah this is very fruit forward. When you get a lot of the. Citrus I guess I would say tropical but. A little bit of lemon orange grapefruit and grapefruit is bordering on tropical but I don't. I mean I had a really tropical beer earlier today and this doesn't you know not go into mango or passionfruit So yeah I think you said it well but the great fruit that's like the most apparent taste I have but when you have a great fruit I.P.A. it's an overpowering this one is just very slight him pleasant I would say this is a fantastic beer I really liked about tasting the carbonation and I think what you said it it finishes quick it doesn't last a real long time of the happiness you know and there's a slight betterness but it's not super bitter I agree with Joe I think it's really enjoyable like you guys said there's a lot of citrus there and the next word that I would use to describe it it's pretty balanced it's better but it also has a sweetness that helps kind of take that bitterness away or balance it at least. And then it like Steve said I think it finishes a little bit dry which is nice that's where the grapefruit comparison really brings home for me is that I don't think great preachers here. Regularly but when you get a great part of that suite up front and then it finishes bitter and it is kind of leaves that little bit of bitter aftertaste but nothing that is intolerable word and yeah the comparison. A couple things I think with the spear obviously for a pale ale I think this is really hopping in Freudian juice see you almost think this is an I.P.A. it's only five point three percent but the See It has the flavor profile of I.P.A.. Something else I notice I agree with Brad and it is pretty balanced and there's like the small backbone of this like cereal grain malt like you know sometimes malls are too sweet it's not
sweet at all it's like cereal really supports And I think enhances those whop flavors that we're all getting and I say five point three percent because I got that from online but the bottle doesn't have it written on it so it seems stronger and if
it is drinking it must not be required and I Oh I think it was five point three Yeah I don't think I would think five point three No one it doesn't taste pretty or everything but it's a six point five or something that's not boozy by any means I agree
with Jeff here I think it is actually a fairly happy beer. But I like it but and I are turning a corner right we're just getting used to what's the deal. This is a pretty hot the pale Coming up we're going to have an I.P.A. and then the double I.P.A. So we're going to keep ramping up the paleness and I'm in that hop ladder platter but before we do that. Let's talk about the interesting beers we had this week so I had one interesting beer this week and that's the only interesting beer I had this week that's the only beer I could get this week I had Belak in in Billy's And that's the only beer you can get there so I had about fifty of them. After a while they all just kind of taste like water and so no bell again is it's somewhere between a Corona. And a Budweiser they were mixed together and then you know after fifty of them you know they don't finish great but we drank a lot of them because we were bullies so that's all I guess and interesting beer Well you always first have them we thought we were like oh this is pretty good like it's an easy drinker right like it's there's nothing offensive about it it's just very like run of the mill beer but after you've been drinking it for eight days like Joy and I would just look at each
other and be like we are so sick of it. There's like nothing else the Good Lord don't want to get warm Oh no. I have an interesting beer too I had a new offering from Ein stock gear and out of activity there Icelandic we heve is excellent and at eight
point zero percent I. Enjoyed them. It's brewed with Angelica root I don't even know what that is but the beer tastes great it's had sounds like it could be a strange true. IP it's good Jeff what do you been drinking. Well I had one really
interesting beer and I don't know if you remember this dollar sput probably not when we were in. The North East last year I picked up a bottle from smutty nose in New Hampshire of a beer that's called the really old brown dog and it's an old old ale and the particular one that I got was from two thousand and twelve which was really unique because it's probably the most aged beer I've ever had in my life and it was excellent like you know the spear was five years old it aged really well it was super smooth it wasn't bare related but it really tasted like a barrel aged beer tasted like a barley wine pretty high alcohol but really smooth all these complex flavors. So I'm glad I brought that back and finally opened it this week and it was. Really really delicious didn't have any of its carbonation left or if it was not really that style. I don't remember noticing lack of carbonation Yeah you know has like that like sort of war mean feeling like that. I think I guess it was probably lower carbonation but it wasn't in a bad way it kind of had that likes slick like syrupy taste but but in a very nice. Creamy texture to it I mean it's definitely like a sipping beer it was I think it was like ten percent alcohol but tasted like it was fifteen percent and it's just one of those beers that really had like gets better if you can let it sit there for several years nice. So real quick I'll tell you about when I had that I have to mention it. Somebody was at the bar and they had brought in a crawler from a brewery in Portland called Great Notion and the beer was called Blueberry muffin and it was as much as a beer can be tasted like a blueberry muffin then you couldn't possibly imagine it was amazing it was so spot on it was ridiculous a good blend of the blueberry muffin and put it into the beer but it was a kind of a hazy golden color. Meld like a blueberry muffin right out of the oven which is odd and it was such a creamy beer and well balanced and like the blue the sour notes of the
blueberry and like the sugar. And then the kind of. The bready muffin like multi miss it was perfect it was really a. Outstanding beer I can't wait to go to Portland I have to go to this place never had the beer before but somebody I just happened
across it and got to try it so I'm looking forward to seeing more from that brewery this is this crowd where did they. This person bring it back on a plane or to the drive back to you know because these are like you know we travel a lot for our beer cations and cans are easier to talk to bring back bottles you know you can do it. I'm just wondering how that held up in terms of if they flew or drove back or how they got back to California I don't know I don't know I didn't ask but our listeners in Portland should send us some and we'll son of some point classes back in return e-mail bear the day and you'll get the shipping address. Has a good idea are those going to the next beer we have from Lord hobo Brewing Company in Massachusetts. Steal This can I I wonder how much of a crime issue they've created by basically allowing people to imploring people this is still the pretty sure you can't get killed I mean it says so right on the can stone has enjoyed by whatever I do it right this is a mess can I do it I just have to say that Lord a hobo has to be one of the best brewery names I've ever heard that's like it. It's cool place we went there on the same trip last year they have to locations in Boston. Where we get this one from is this from Tor It was from to for. Tour they seem to feature lower hobo beers a lot I think there's three different ones out in the vault right now. Very consistently good this one here is a light straw color. Thin white head but much smaller bubbles in the
last beer. Just a couple of. Little bubbles floating up of noticeable carbonation and then quite a bit of haze we're dealing with here does anybody think it smells almost exactly like the last period just thought yeah but less like less fruity smelling I'm getting almost no aroma off of it all I'm trying real hard to pick something. It is kind of like getting any room you like get a lot of aroma obviously some floral like a floral I think somebody said with a last pair like a soapy. Mist to it it's but it's a positive thing it's like this floral citrus in the aroma I think it actually has a lot of aroma of the lesson the last year though I think quite a bit less I could see like some wild flower like of of the flowers and a little bit I'm
not getting the fruit and the citrus that we got off the last I don't really like color I mean like Alice said I mean it's a it's like a hazy pale yellow pretty like colored for an I.P.A. but I got a I got a pretty thick head with a lot of Lacy and on the glass which I like so this beer is very similar to the last beer we had in taste in my opinion except for it doesn't it dry sorry thin she's more like sweet and more. Like syrupy tasting but in a good way it's not like super syrupy it just has a lot longer lasting syrup or sweet flavor to it compared to last year but it reminds me a lot of the last one we had I think this one is a little bit more I'm tasting a lot more malt the last one like the hops are there too but I think it's a little bit more multi The last beer that we had and the other thing that I noticed is that I'm getting like an ever so slight metallic or like tin. Type player to it not in a bad way it's very subtle but it's there it is there the now this beer is been in the fridge a little bit longer than we care to keep it so that that could have something to do with that this beer I am getting last year was very fruit forward citrus all those great for this one here is more like a beer to me like it's hops little pine little citrus hops. Paired with a lot more bigger malt. Backbone on the spear and then. The aftertaste is you know it lingers on quite a bit think after the previous beer is more abbreviated I definitely agree with like their spine to it but I
do get some citrus I get mostly Lemon though like the last beer had great fruit I get a lot of this like slightly acidic lemon and it's sort of that a little bit that metallic flavor that you guys were getting but it's really clean at the same time like the finish yeah it's clean and crisp and it's I mean it's a pretty light bodied beer again for a for an I.P.A. it's this is a pretty easy drink in light refreshing I.P.A. and I get a lot of that lemon citrus flavor I was going to say that too I think that it has a fairly light mouth feel even it doesn't really heavy on your tongue. Being the at least the percent more than the previous year. I don't it doesn't seem any more heavy than the previous one now I just I don't know I I'm getting a little bit different I do think it's a lot sweeter than the last one so maybe that's where my taste just a bit different where the other one had so much front and hopping as to it this one is coming off a lot more sweeter to me I mean this one is almost completely lacking sweetness in my opinion I think it just it's better to me I like the US that metallic and the pine because some of the earth earth tones are there. I'm I'm trying to find sweetness and I'm not finding where I agree with the state
if I did it's not you see I mean it's got to be so you're pretty it's like a floral I mean I said the laminate and that's not juicy to me it's it's a different type of hops than we're used to in I.P.S. Yeah I wouldn't say it's not sweet but I'm not
I don't I wouldn't characterize it this way but I'm trying to figure out like is it just less balance than the last one because Blossom is pretty balanced or yeah I don't know how to describe it. Done a good job. At epic fail. And now the beer news of the day. Well it's been twenty five years since the first sublime album. Forty ounces to freedom and they are to set aside to celebrate this with the release of a. Mexican style log or in forty ounce cans that are going to be produced by L. Smith in San Diego and so that it would be out soon. I will look for that thirty early old forty ounce bottles. And then I know that's a big bottle thing as it would be twelve ounce twelve ounce six packs through else with supply chain they had to drink about a paperback and while it is the one that we recorded this on April first Happy April Fool's Day tomorrow I thought Jeff scheduled. The ale Smith Tony Gwynn beer for the opening day of the baseball season that's a good touch Jeff. Thank you. Our next story here. And see where one comes down on this. Stone release is beer made with treated sewage water. San Diego Stone Brewing the nation's night largest brewery has an umbrella beer made with treated sewage water the recycled water pail Israel is called Full Circle Stone made five barrels of the beer using water treated at the city's pure water demonstration plant according to times in San Diego said. Officials hope to purify enough recycle water by twenty thirty five to handle one third of the city's drinking water supply I think it's a great marketing stunt because I think that people drink sewer water a lot more than you think you do I think I'd have absolutely no problem with that at all I mean that's the whole point of having the
technology is that it's just water after they treat it you know I guarantee you you go and you find a fresh spring or you find a super regulated water plant has like a thousand by different task that happen I'd rather drink the water from the tree to plant because I guarantee you that it's going to be a lot safer when it isn't there like something to circulate around the internet I don't know if it's here and not but that like. There are molecules of it's quite possible that you are drinking molecules of Hitler's ear and stuff because like all of that just keeps on getting like recycled into the water table or whatever look at out of telling it that they. Are Steve Gonzales who created full circle admits to being skeptical at first but says that in the mean one of his favorites among the pale is that I've had it's probably in the top three he told K G T. Yeah that you need also to. Get some horrible notes some tropical fruit notes it's a very clean tasting beer. Well I mean like water quality is obviously super important for any brewery and I think it's something they all have to perfect right and I'm sure the spear is perfectly safe but if I hand it to you and said This is from recycled sewage water you know you're going to give like a funny look before you drink it I bet I'm sure it'll be fine but I don't know yeah well you know all the faults I had it was like the time that Roe guy gave me a beer that was made with the yeast from his beard. On. The step of the first sip of the beer was I was. About ready. Even though the beer tasted fine but you know that's just yeah it is it's you I'm sure we're going to see more so I mean we're in California we've had big drought problems for years now we have plenty of rain apparently but I mean like long term I bet we're going to see more and more places doing this because there's a lack of water you see the number of Perris in Southern California whatever they need they need this water and they're going to get it from somewhere so I'm sure they're not the the last Spring to do this you know I think it's probably even might be better than a lot of other breweries water because they're getting it I mean it's trying to sound strange but they're getting it fresh from the source I mean if they're the first people that access it is treated water I mean that's it's the purest water you can probably is not a point not to mention I kind of feel like it's along this is a bad analogy but along the same lines of like the airlines that have the crash is the safest airline to fly the next day it's kind of like if people know that sewer water you bet your bippy that they're going to have treated it like perfectly. So that it is completely potable. And I bet my baby. And finally I have here the top fifty craft brewing companies by sales volume. I'll give you number one young Ling and Sons Pottsville Pennsylvania now that's bordering on not being crafted more right and out of the two Sam Adams number two Boston Beer Company anyone guess number three here in Nevada Vadis number four don't know I already told you it was a number. Of them and. You're right I. Am I going Goose Island New Belgium yes. Shiner Bock. Number five is Gambrinus in San Antonio Texas probably a Shiner Bock never even heard. Do ville. Pass a Robles Kansas City Cooperstown you know those breweries Belzer was all that because they bought Firestone. We have a saying where this is where they are right are located Firestone is their biggest asset
Kansas City Bowl of our number two Cooperstown Ommegang you know you can just see the location the brewery is in. So that's because it's a conglomerate Belle's the chutes stone Oskar blues Brooklyn. And the list goes on. Top fifty overall brewing companies not Kraft. And hazard Bush number one Miller Coors number two Pabst number three young Ling number four North American breweries Rochester New York Boston Beer number six year about a number seven and then from there it goes down list you can see where they stack up on the overall picture. Pretty interesting All right let's get into one more beer before the break. We had a pale ale we had our I.P.A. and now we're going to go double I.P.A. we're going. To dip out from the rep and series. One of our favorite berries for share. And repost stands for rotational Imperial India Pale Ale theories will be my first experience with love and. Rules and a lot of good things about. Killer bees is killer I would say to buy for the I.P.A. or killer but the piece is good for the head on the board of beers away clear or it looks pretty clear it will frothy head I even try to port carefully there's just a ton ahead a nice foamy white This is your standard golden color beer very light carbonation.
Take they're almost pretty deftly hoppity and a little pink Yep I'm getting at touch a caramel as well. Yeah I mean there's something a little bit sweet in that. Ten percent Wow a lot nine percent well nine percent. Yet is nine percent ten percent
with an asterisk. So taste wise I what I get some tropical fruit and I don't know if everybody's going to agree with me here but I get like tea leaves now I do agree with you you know yes it has like a kind of tannic. Drying thing that tea leaves to I could like black tea I'm. Some kind of tea like it's not there's no citrus maybe a little bit of citrus in this but that's like some I.P.A. is out there have this flavor of like tea leaves that makes it really smooth and I think it contributes to the balance of the beer and I really like that flavor in an I.P.A. I don't know is my taste buds tonight but everywhere I've had it just seems so dry of a mystery it's one of the driest of all and I feel like I'm getting thirsty or the more I drink now it definitely does like. Dry you out it's death the caving I mean I know I know delicately. I'm surprised at the low bitterness of this beer like it's going to you know it's hopping it's double I.P.A. you expect bitterness but it's not overly bitter I'm not sure that I would guess ten percent I think that it masks the alcohol ninety one percent sorry nine percent Tim. But you know totally agree yeah. It doesn't it's not our enemy at all. Even the five I'm not a huge fan of it just not my style
so this beer is. I don't think we're giving it justice to how unique and complex This beer is and the first thing I'll say about. Is the mouth feel it coats your mouth and is laying out a ton of flavor like you said there is a little bit tea flavor but there are so many like organic and like flour and earthy tones to this as well as a rule a good hop bitterness that doesn't stay too long it's almost like the sweetness allows it to hit you and stay there but not be too drastic I know that we said
that it's kind of drying and it's got a really dry finish but I thought feel like it's a little bit oily and not in a bad way but the thing that I've noticed is that the bitterness doesn't stick around but the aftertaste does like it it's sticking
around but when I'm exhaling with my mouth closed after probably I don't know fifteen seconds after my last a bit this beer I'm getting I think what Joe was alluding to like a lot of floral notes that they're like way after the bitterness is gone is somewhere unique if someone if you close your eyes drink this and someone told me it was a dark amber color and it was thick it had like a real thick head I break Yeah that's probably what this beer is but it's lighter than what it tastes I do I save us a lot of it I feel like if it is a very well crafted You know there's a lot of there's a lot of flavor in there of it you kind of. The more sips I have more flavors I can pick out it's still not my favorite style but I can appreciate it and we mentioned earlier of the lack of alcohol taste it is nine percent beer and I think that is a test and you know the amount of craft they put into it she had a lot with them what I notice is it's not really like a West Coast style it's not really East Coast style and I'm not saying that's because of the geography in Wyoming where this is from but I think there's a good amount of malt to this beer it's like a dough we ready a little bit of sweetness. And I think that sweetness really like prevents.
Hopping us I mean I'm sorry the bitterness from coming through it's not bitter at all and Britain when you say it's only I think that's the same mouth coating that Joel is referring to I mean there's a lot of hops in here but there's also a really good
amount of malts which you would expect for a nine percent of all I.P.A. but it's so well balanced like this is very drink of all even people that don't love double I.P.A. as I think can appreciate the quality of the spear absolutely like like everybody knows this is not necessarily Stephen my alley but I can definitely appreciate the spirit and I'm really glad that we had it tonight yeah I'm happy that viewership the seven more of these. Nice you know we should mention before we finish this beer the name asterisk I had to look this up on the can I guess that's looking it up because I didn't know the story when the spear came out I didn't know what what the name really meant and we had Melbourne I.P.A. we had to buy for we had a couple of their beers killer bees killer bees so asterisk just so everybody you know our listeners know what this means is Melvin won a. B.F. gold medal. I think it was for two by four it was there for two by four it was two by four right you know and then the next year they were not invited back and so they create this beer with an asterisk to basically signify that. I think they they think they would have won it had been invited I was pretty clever I like the like the can in the marketing but that sort
of the story of why it's called asterisk because whoever won that next year when they were divided they're put in an asterisk after it because they would have won in their opinion because they didn't get invited back that's kind of weird there a
little bit or. Just a little. I would like include the tail section of the show when we come back we have the stout section with a caramel stout and two Imperial Stout plus comments from you guys the listeners will be right back this is the beer they

Welcome back to the show Strange Brew segment. We try to find a strange one this is a salted Carmel stout. From break side brewery in Portland Oregon it's made with caramel and sea salt I thought it was a little strange I don't know how much saltiness is going to be in here that's going to determine how strange this is delicious meal if you. Ask any head going on here break side brewery did we go there we did go there. Were No where was that it's in Portland I think and know that. This is the last one we went
to oh yeah this is like right before the airport OK And this is the one where they served us that the spicy Yeah chili beer and then said they were wrong and they said I'm like I'm pretty sure this is the hot tamale and they're like No serve that's the something else I'm like. It's burning my mouth. And it was absolutely no way that's possible and then oh wait the lines are crossed Yeah and no shit at that point when you're drinking for three days straight and you've had like sixty different beers you have enough heartburn that when you taste that hot tamale beer whatever. Or was it was some sort of pull a tamale beer the hottest beer I've ever had you know for a fact your heartburn kicks in and says yeah this is not just a standard beer in
the three day period only that it ever eaten in drinking more in my life in the three day period of my body was just rejecting everything from that point on when I really want to know more beer taken three part of the six a day for the heart we must of had one hundred thousand calories. So one of things I like about this in the brewery was nice it's a great place to get a drink I remember liking the set up a lot but I like this allied looks like a nice label where you just turned in the local
thief in your town and you get a reward of five thousand dollars now you're getting your You're getting your reward by drinking his beer because it's like a reward poster you know it's nice because the good old timey label on there yeah I like it the beer yeah I mean it's a super dark brown color I guess we would expect that from a salted caramel stout. Does it have any red highlights you know a bit maybe yeah it does little bit about pretty thick. Head. And pretty thin and I smell like a brownie to me like of not real chocolate overly chocolate here almost like a. Baker's chocolate maybe yeah I would say I'm actually not getting any caramel on the aroma I think I am more salt your. Little bit of salt what does salt smell like ocean you're getting a lot of the chocolate malt smell on it like smells great yeah a little earthy on the first so I would expect it more sweetness but it's kind of a mellow. You're right initially there are some earthy hop flavors which tend when I drink these types of beers that have that flavor it's usually like on the back end but that's really like right at the beginning as the hops and then later you get the. The coffee of the coffee the like the burnt malt flavors that you would expect for this type of beer I like it my first step was enjoyable I mean it's it's not too salty but I get little hints of the salt where it's just the right amount of I mean when I when I try this beer I immediately think of like. Ice cream they have like salted caramel ice cream and there's a little bit of that it's not too sweet but there's just the right amount of saltiness when you say coffee in toffee and bird that all rings true to me but Caramel is a little bit of a lighter flavor then talkie and coffee and I'm not getting too much caramel here and I don't get the salt I'm not getting either so it's interesting. Not a bad tasting beer but it's not quite as advertised when I take a sip I get jealous I'm not I'm not getting any saltiness or and I'm a salt fiend too like it but salt and everything but I'm not getting and maybe that's why I'm not getting any salt that. I'm not getting any caramel I think it kind of tastes like a brownie it's I think it's more chocolatey than anything else but even that
is very reserved and. Under-powered I would say you know green with both you it's a very good stout I'm just not getting the salted in the care about I think it tastes more like a porter like it's just yes everybody's really like dialed back exactly what I was thinking of for you said it was that the first thing that stood out to me about this beer was the I guess the road we have a drink ability of it it's a very it's very smooth it's very light. I mean it's no unique in terms of that they're saying it's it doesn't have those dark heavy thick qualities it's it's just it's almost a light drinker I mean. There is a corps light of stout I mean nothing would make it with a lot of flavor built in but I mean just in terms of the mouth feel of it it's just feel easy to drink and I'm not sure what this cost Brian magine for a very similar beer I'd like to compare this to a black. Shoots black because I think it taste very similar I think it does too and that's what I was thinking of when I was like I think it's more port or even than Stout is I think in a black to him I have a little bit more of the Multi in chocolate flavor to it yeah black people are does. But it's not far off and like I said I'm guessing this is you know nine to ten
dollar bottle of beer and I think you're to get a similar taste from a black porter from shoots. I mean for the most part I agree with you guys but I do get some saltiness in the finish and I don't know if it's mental because I'm looking at a bottle and I'm supposed to taste some saltiness I don't get the caramel but I do get salt and it's not overwhelming it's somewhat subtle but in the finish it sort of this lingering saltiness like I just got out of the ocean for swimmin and I can taste that salt in my mouth that sort of just is there that I don't get from a normal stouter the more it warmed up I think I did get detect a little bit more than the average is I think that's where the earthiness comes from the I mean Saul is that you know real earthy taste to it I think that's what we're picking up on that will be interesting when we go into our next out which is a breakfast out mean that is I mean it's hopefully it's a true stout will be able compare the two hopefully but before we get to the. Incoming transmission You've Got Mail. Comments this week. On our last show we did Emeril a gorilla from smog city J M five six two they won they won on the website. One of many smog city's delicious beers I could drink this I.P.A. all day long I pick up a few bottles when visiting the brewery. Such a good beer I've been thinking about that one ever since the last podcast which was a couple weeks ago and that was a good period thing that I have yes ever really. Oh really good. We featured. A week ago or so the revelation Stout from public house Brewing Company This was not a podcast beer right Jeff. This is one that I had when I was in St Louis a few weeks ago OK So up there public house brewery responded to our tweet on Twitter on
Twitter we are at beer of the day and they said like an apple a day right beer of the day. Keeps the doctor away too nice carried a kind of like that. And then on Instagram all the stout said Is this because I followed you today well Cheers That's right all the Stout's we feature that because we knew you started following us and we wanted to make sure that there was a stout on the site for you. Thanks for the comment. Facebook dot com says beer the day we had a strawberry milkshake I.P.A. from tired hands during company back on March ninth. That one generated a huge amount of likes and comments I think everyone loves milkshakes So you call a beer the strawberry milkshake I.P.A. I think at that bodes well. It brings all the boys the Amy load them or Carter one that I am so so in search of yeah that's a tough one to get. I think we're pretty lucky to get our hands on that one but a popular beer. But when your hands on your tired hands on that one definitely seek that out. If you have any comments you can post them on any of the Twitter Instagram Facebook or leave them right on the website here the day dot com. Or let's get into the next beer. We have we have the hog Waller scramble Imperial Stout makes me think of breakfast.
Scramble and hog it's also breakfast out. The breakfast is over because it's this is the can it makes sense for the name champion Brewing Company Charlottesville Virginia home to mom to cello and Thomas Jefferson. So warning to all the listeners when you open this bottle be just can be careful because they must fill it to maximum capacity because it just carbonated blue Well not carbonated I think they just fill it to the brim so when the. Little tab goes down it blows about Anderson Valley because that one are still this consistently and always both up on me or open a wonderful job or it might last I wasn't sure I had any liquid I thought it was all foam but it's cascading very nicely into a nice a nice round colored stout here yeah everybody's poor had a lot of head on it. But I mean my looks a lot like the last spirits it's super dark it's almost black in color the head is like a khaki tan like light brown pretty thick and foamy I mean it looks good it's got that sort of oily slickness to the head that I like in a style. OK but these these two aromas are not related at all but when I my initial sniff I immediately thought of the mint chocolate chip ice cream I had the and then I went back I went back for a second one and I sniffed.
Longer and the mint chocolate chip ice cream turned into maple syrup I think you're spot on two very valid suspects. But they don't they're not really but I'm getting like a little maple e thing maybe the maybe it's the breakfast in my head does it it has like men all eat of aroma maybe that's the Mint So yes I'm what I'm doing I'm getting a. Chocolate cake with a mental even a raspberry on top that's the spell I'm getting. I agree Wow taste it. I think the Mint Chocolate Chip thing continues that kind of doesn't talk to by scream I'm lot of mint for sure cooling effect very I'm like it's like we had a beer a few maybe the last podcast or maybe two podcast ago where I thought I had like that and these meant candies taste and this has a little bit of that same taste. I don't know where that was I've never said this on a podcast before so this might go horribly. But alright yeah this is not going to does anybody get like a clay taste like I'm trying to describe it's like a chalk E. Clay
has to it. Does have a chalk email feel that's for sure I actually think I'm with you on this one Joel it's kind of like no one's going to know what this is but if you if you're in Europe at all year having problems with your stomach they give you something called and I always describe it is like looking a tennis court but if you queue if you choose Tums if you think aside and it's not just the consistency of it like if you set aside whatever flavor terms you're chewing the chalk does like have a
taste and I'm I think I agree with you on the clay thing like a little bit of a resonate taste like like a rust economy taste to it I'm a little bit metallic but. Even. The fall flavor of mint flavor whatever you want to call it balance it out real
nice it gives it a real clean finish it's a lot of after dinner mint to me like the little chocolate things with the green wrapper that they give you. The snow there and yeah. There is in the. Yeah I greed and I wish I would have said the chalky thing now because it's all focusing on but it is not me. It's I don't want anybody be off put by that it's just a part of the mouth feel it's not like something it's overwhelming that. The whole labor profile aside from the Mint I feel like I'm also getting something a little bit herbal or medicinal about it. And you know they're I mean it's yeah. Well for something out there. I don't know if you guys have if everybody's had this but like if you're in the south in New Orleans and you have coffee with chicory I sort of get that chicory flavor in this beer anybody else is also like very very toasted here and he kind of does have that like real kind of smoked meat maybe like both would a liquid smoke even kind of and a flavor back to it well said Yeah well I was also just thinking that in contrast of the previous one we had the that's what I said it was very. Easy drinker I mean this one is much more of a traditional stout much it's heavier a little thicker. And I don't think it's sweet like there's a little bit of coffee a little bit of chocolate and we talked about the mint but it's not a sweet stout it's like. It's like a pleasant and I don't like beers that are overly sweet this is a what I would like to drink when I'm trying to stay out yeah I don't think I'd want to have more than one. You can't have this in one in a in one sitting but I really do enjoy this beer it's just complex it's got a lot going on the men in the medicinal qualities of it are you know they're they're complex and they're funded enjoy All right well let's get into the final beer of the night number six we have plead the Fifth Imperial Stout from Dark Horse Brewing Company Marshall Michigan and you can see yeah the not. To be that and the rock across the boat. Is that and most of that and the amps go up to ten exactly does that mean it's louder and louder Well it's one louder isn't it it's not ten you see most blokes him be playing a ten year old ten you know all the way all the way up you know the way up your own channel you can tell where can you go from that well I don't know what exactly we do if we need that extra push over the cliff you know we do put up with that in exactly one I want to just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder. He's going to eleven and this one goes to eleven eleven percent. I plead the Fifth you know the song clip is great because it gives us time to pour the beer and we don't have to like talk about you know come up with random things to say well you know it pours so it works out plead the Fifth Imperial Stout from Dark Horse the sky if Dark Horse is a testament to the color of their beer might be the darkest YOU HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY it I'm surprised how dark the head is but yeah it's like a black hole so I always say Oh it's very dark and there's little highlights peeking through. Yeah. But no there's nothing the head looks like chalk. Ice cream yeah. It is super dark pretty blue zero. Yes well spent Hassidic it smells like. Like molasses and it's mostly molasses and banana Oh no Oh you little dark cherry in the room to you. Yes Yeah I get that banana man I know if you guys had a mother who had been in a bread and then she had those bananas have been like sitting on the counter for like six weeks and they're all dark and crap that's what that banana smell taste like it's that ferment a dark banana smell. So the head had dissipated down to nothing and then I took a sip ome back up to two fingers never had a lot of head to begin with on the Pour me but at least had out of the all the styles tonight but yeah mind of the same thing the first step my initial reaction is that if you told me I was drinking a cold shot of capital or shot of espresso I believe you. I don't taste the alcohol necessarily it tastes like a really good coffee I taste alcohol but not like an overpowering one but yeah I see you're saying with that kind of espresso he taste I think dark and. I think the alcohol as well him for eleven percent if you tell me this eleven percent I tell you to get the hell out. But in the mouth. It's a little chewy like like. You know a lot of Russian Imperial Stout but showy sort of texture to it and I sort of get that here maybe that's the eleven percent but it like after you take a separate It's got this mouth coating on the chewing this where you're just like smacked can your lips because you can still taste it it's like you took a touchy roll with a shot of espresso through in your mouth chewed it all together spit it back out in a cup or a little bit of alcohol and put it back in Ramallah. That's what this taste like. To get like really dark chocolate cake like yeah. Like dent chocolate yeah to me this is what that's what a stout is I mean when I'm thinking of a style it's like you're chewing your beer. And that's what even like just shocked even more about the salted caramel earlier I guarantee try that again right now you're going to like I don't even know it's there
it would probably taste watery compared to the yeah I think and this is a this is a big Remey stout. And there's some pretty nice I mean there's some dark fruits here but yeah you guys are all right everything you said this is what a stout should be that they can this be. The mouthfeel I mean it's chocolate cake it's the malts the burnt flavors I mean this is less beer and you said I'm surprised to see this in a twelve ounce bottle this is something I would expect and maybe a different format.
But I really enjoy the spirit this is a really nice I think depiction of the style of beer I'm actually getting like kind of along lines like the dark fruit some figs and. By just kind of reminded me of a rum cake so maybe like the booze Enos the start and come out a little bit yeah I was you know down cake and then i first thing I thought my next step to was immediately Yeah it's like just like you have a super double chocolate cake with some rum in there somewhere and that's kind of what
you're getting out of this it's generally when someone is pleading the fifth they're guilty but they don't want to incriminate themselves what does this beer guilty of being delicious being awesome yeah. It's being boozy Yeah it's guilty of being boozy to
trying to hide it but it's there the booze are there and I think they hide it well it was there during the height of the. I think it did a good job actually Yeah exactly I don't think it's hidden I mean I don't think they're trying to hide it I mean it's boozy from start to finish it's a strong beer Yeah and if you'd if you drink one of these by yourself I mean you're going to be feeling it big time afterwards you'd be slit this is the kind of beer and a No like for me it's like I magine my grandpa is like has this glass of beer sitting by the fire and I go over and take it he looks at me and he says hey be careful. I got his beer is like no joke. That's not Dr Pepper son. Or a well. Of him. Well that's it the six are done. Six is a good number to have because when you get to seven or eight you're start to feel a little bit maybe don't do we don't we're not as good on the last two production qualities of that let's why don't we go to eleven. Yeah one day we will. I think after the show is over we should have one more beer just for fun. But before that let's recap the beers we've had and then we'll pick our favorite beer the day written. Already we started off with the X. top series gold Pale Ale from toppling Goliath Brewing Company we moved on to steal this can i P A from Lord hobo the asterisk Deepa for Melvin Brewing Company was the third one we had followed by salted caramel Stout from break side brewery we had the hog Waller scramble imperial style that was the breakfast out from champion Brewing Company and finally we had plead the Fifth Imperial Stout from Dark Horse Brewing Company out of Marshall Michigan. I had no idea when the pick so Joel really spin this wheel hard because. I need some time thank. You brain my wrist. That's rare but I'm first. So I have mixed feelings on this. I have a favorite I have a favorite from the first half a favor from the second half. I would normally go with the asterisk because. I really enjoyed the beer but it probably wasn't my favorite Melvin beer that I've ever had so I'm going to skip that and I'm going to plead the Fifth from the last beer that we just had I think this was an excellent beer Dallas picked this up and gave me a bottle which I really appreciate but
I'm going to drink this whole bottle myself it's what I look for in a stout all the complex flavors really phenomenal taste so I'm going with the last beer plead the Fifth imperial stuff. So for me it was between ex cop series gold pill I really
enjoyed that I thought it was the incredibly balanced the bitter with the sweet it was happy it was juicy. That's not normally the style of beer that would be my favorite but I really enjoyed having it but I'm going to go with what you guys know I'm
going to go with and I'll go with leave the fifth everything just said it's exactly what I'm looking for in a stout and all the other descriptors that he mentioned. Someone to be short and sweet on my beer the day there are some of these beers that are
we have doubles of that are in there for drain or the best part about it is I get to choose of what I'm going to drink next I'm going to go and get the asterix double I.P.A. from Melbourne because I know we have an extra one there refrigerator and that is the next beer I'm going to drink because it was that damn good that's all I'm going to say seven to. That was the inside joke. Let me actually. Let me explain it's a. Good lesson on this show three people said they were torn in the F.B.I. And I'm like OK I get it over the course of the year and so every time someone says Torre now I'm going to play never when Bruce and. I had to make sure Dad got his Natalie Imbruglia I mean I'm not torn and all and you guys are going to be surprised at what I'm not torn over. X. hops there is gold was down like. Oh. It was a great great beer I mean like Britain mentioned at the bitterness at the sweetness very well balanced very easy to drink I would drink that any day I love stouts at that one bar in a way took a bit of it I am torn because. He makes a great point there. Series What a great pale it's hard was a good pan it was it's hard to argue with that. I'm going to agree with Joel though asterisk double I.P.A.. Really smooth nine percent very dribble not boozy for me at all not super bitter but a lot of up front hopping this but it balanced with the mold very well for some reason mil than there double I.P.A. is really work for me work for my palate so asterisk is my beer the day I think I think this panel picked the top three beers out of the six are literally like the after school is really good I like to I'm not a deeper person obviously but I was glad I had that one and it was really complex to get a lot out of that beer which
is nice lore hobo maybe got the raw into the deal because the beer. Has been in the fridge a little while we have to know more Lord who will be yours that we got recently they're fresh we've got to make sure we have those on a show coming soon so that we give them the best opportunity and since this was our sixty ninth show. I can the first three sixteen. If I was doing a thing it's in the feet of clay I was six feet tall.
